Almost every nation has atrocities in its past.
Yeah... but isn't there a general feeling that the Holocaust was (at least until that point) unique in its 'scientific' approach to genocide? It was a peculiarly modern, 20th-century sort of atrocity in the way it utilised technological infrastructure like railways; the preciseness of its record-keeping; the clear goals of its leaders. It has a particularly noxious sort of horror about it.

The Mao kitschification thing is really weird. I can understand the appreciation for, say, the design aspects of Russian or Chinese propaganda posters, but the way you can get Mao on *everything* is odd. He wasn't exactly peachy keen on the mass murdering front.
(And you all know, of course, that if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.)

And at that age, for most people, things like Hitler and the Nazis are pretty abstract things. They're almost metaphors.
I think this is an important point. The power of the imagery has resonated for so long in so many ways that it - ironically? - creates a kind of distance. For people who don't know any history, Nazism and Hitler are just shorthand for 'evil stuff' (see also: use of the Hitler moustache in teabagging protests). So if you want to transgress or shock, using Nazi imagery is the way to do it.
It makes me stabby. But I suppose I'm humourless that way.

used to be if you were going home to visit for the (Northern ) summer you could get the earliest flight to Honolulu, spend the day at the beach, then grab an onward flight to AKL at midnight
For my purposes, the flight that used to go direct (I think?) from Dallas/Fort Worth to Auckland was pretty special. No LAX!

Summer of my German Soldier
Is that one offensive because it makes girls cry their eyes out? (Or was it just me?)

That Wikipedia list is blowing my mind. Deenie? The one about the impossibly attractive teen with scoliosis? What... oh, that's right. Wanking. There's wanking in Deenie.

RIP Nurse Steve Mills - 196? - 199?
The worst was when Carmen dropped dead. I cried. And I haven't watched it since, actually...
MySky's favourite trick is unexpectedly losing its series linking
I've tried to work out why it does this, and I think it *might* cancel the series link if you watch the episode and delete it before it's had time to scan ahead to the next week. Which means you have to leave the watched episode sitting there for a while. But we never have enough room to do that. (Also, why does it not understand that series links can be daily rather than weekly? I want *every episode of The Daily Show*, Tuesday to Friday. I do not want to series link it separately on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.)
On the other hand, it's up there with the top five purchases of my entire life, so I can't bitch too much.

Those customs requirements for NZers going to America are flat out nutty. I have never been more grateful to have two passports, and get a 'welcome home' at both ends...

It's great that things which were once ghettoised as 'craft' are now 'art', and can be lavish and crazy and weird if the artists feel the urge. (And also that more traditional 'craft' is so much more valued than it was previously. I note that I'm typing this next to an ad for Felt...)

By some curious twist of logic my parents decided that to resolve my brother's er curiosity, the family would join a nudist club.
Your parents clearly rule.
