  • Hard News: The Next Act,

I was never a fan of Holmes, even less so given the over-the-top obits refered to above.

As for Seven Sharp, what a dog's breakfast. It seems confused and directionless. I thought the piece on post-traumatic stress disorder was a good, solid article, but why have it at the end instead of the start ?
The rest was irrelevant, bland puff-pieces.

Also, there is no need for three presenters. Have that many reiterates the lack of leadership and direction. Time is wasted letting them all bang on, rather than just hitting into a story.

Sorry this isn't on topic, but looks like Leslie Longstone is falling on her sword over the Novopay debacle.

I use IE on Windows 7 and the top clip started playing automatically. It was a bit embarassing as a) it was loud and b) I'm in the public library.

Is the bar in the Street Chant clip an actual bar in Auckland or just a studio mock-up ?

Either way, it's a cool clip.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A Year of It,

Can't say I've bought a lot of albums this year, but the local music scene here in Dunedin has been absolutely over-flowing with new, young bands. I reckon I've gone to more gigs this year than in the past five or six years combined.

Two gigs really stood out: Astro Children, Opposite Sex and Die ! Die ! Die ! at the Crown in May, and Space Bats Attack, Astro Children, A Distant City and Idiot Prayer at 12 Below a month or so ago.

Radio One has also been having free gigs for card-holders during the year, so it's been a heap of fun to also see Strange Harvest, Dudley Benson and others I can't remember live this year.

Myself and a few others are flying up from the South Island for the Neil Young concert in Auckland. It'll be awesome.

Slow Boat's owned their site for decades, so rent prices are no excuse for their steep prices.

Cale's autobiography What's Welsh For Zen ? is a superb read, he's very warts'n' all in discussing himself and there's great anecdotes through out it.

James Young's account of life as Nico's Keyboardist, Songs They Never Play On The Radio is hilarious and includes a section on touring NZ with Headless Chickens supporting.
