  • Hard News: Friday Music: No longer…, in reply to Russell Brown,

Trick Mammoth are pretty good, but Millie Lovelock's main band, Astro Children, are even better, I reckon. As the name suggests, they go for a more droney, shoe-gazey, space rock approach.

Drummer Sam Valentine is also the bassist for the more poppy, surf-pop Males, plus he writes a music column each Saturday for the Otago Daily Times.

Apart from these acts, there's also several other very, very good young bands around Dunedin at present; I reckon the local scene is the best it's been several years' primarily due to these bands and their associated bands.

I'm baffled by so many people that normally wouldn't touch heavy metal with a bargepole going ga-ga over Beastwars - John Campbell being a classic example. Is it simply because they're from NZ ?

Obviously they're very good at what they do, I "get" that. But there are a lot of people that otherwise have no interest in metal, have never shown any interest previously in, say, Sepultra or Mastadon or whoever, yet are getting all excited by Beastwars.

It's as if the same people who'd previously never shown any interest in reggae were to suddenly get excited by, say, Fat Freddy's.

    It simply doesn't add up.

Regarding Gillard, it's a numbers game. She's a got a majority of precisely one and is loath to risk it.

If she had a majority of, say, 20, I suspect there'd have been more progress in Australia.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Cool Return, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

I think the new Cave album is poor myself and I saw that as someone for whom they're my all-time favourite band.
The actual songs are ok at best. There just seems to be little focus and effort put in to them. they meander along and really fail to grip me. But worst of all are the lyrics, far and away his worst lot in over a decade.

I liked Abbatoir Blues / Lyre and Lazarus, but Push The Sky Away is a letdown.

I think he's now at the same stage as, say, Neil Young or Leonard Cohen. A formidable reputation based on a long run of classics in his first 10 years or so, but now well into being patchy, quality-wise. There'll be a good album or two, then a clunker.

  • Hard News: First, admit it's broken,

Just before the US presidential election I bumped into a friend and asked how his daughter was (she's married to an American and they've lived in Chicago for almost 20 years).

He said they were ok, but about to arrive back in NZ to live. "They reckon America's f--ked", he said (meaning politically, economically, socially).

Great band in their day, but it's all been downhill since The Hit Parade albums 20 years ago, sadly.
