    that shorthand

But it still only a shorthand. And worse its a shorthand of variable meaning. It works only when everyone agrees on the current meaning. And when people start arguing about the meaning of the shorthand any hope of actually discussing anything meaningful is lost.

But for the worst part of it is that we don't need the shorthand, particularly here. We don't have limits on space so why not actually take the time to describe the actual thought instead of tossing out the shorthand.

  • Capture: Flash Cars,

Retreating from less friendly threads to see the steampunk Segway is such a relief.

It does look as though it uses the same gyroscopic principle, all the weight within the wheel.

Gotta admire the garage genius who built it.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus,

One limitation of the left right debate is its narrowness, particularly in nz. Coming back from the USA it was clear even ACT would have been considered lefty liberal, but by contrast with parts of Europe The Greens are hopelessly mired in right wing capitalist dogma.

As a result I tend to eschew left right and simply ask what do we actually want and how do we best get it.

To answer Ben's question if we want the best education for our kids should we adopt a failed model from the USA? Who cares if the successful models come from a left or right wing government the aim is educated kids. Creating an ill educated generation to fit a right/left model is silly.

I'd also note that typos are easier on an iPad under the influence of alcohol.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus,

Ben I'd be just happy with policy that hadn't been proven to fail elsewhere. Not making other people's mistakes would be a great start.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus,

So Rich if you are unconvinced that Labour's failure was content based then you need to come up with an alternative explanation for the observed fact. It may be that the public didn't understand or weren't convinced well enough by the message. But to my mind that comes perilously close to denying the observation.

To me it seems mosT likely that somecombination failed content and failed ability to engage voters wit Labour's fundamental ideology (whatever that may be at the moment) is the most likely cause.

If I was Labour I'd be unwilling to bet the next election that it was merely poor delivery of message.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus,

The content they used for the last six months failed, or at least some of it did. They know it failed because they have fewer seats in parliament. Which bits failed is something that needs more than 2 weeks to figure out.

I would really worry if Shearer had already decided exactly which content caused that failure. So actually I would rather see him simply say look we clearly need to reassess our performance so apart from the really obvious shit like worker's rights to a living wage we aren't ready to give you your soundbites.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus,

And as for content, well at this stage I would be surprised if the Labour leader is ready to deliver the content that will win the next election. If they had that content sorted they ought to have used it to win the election just passed.

The next 6 months have to be about figuring out what content will form the basis of a platform that people can vote for, from now until then we shouldn't expect to hear any significant content other than when they attack obviously flawed National policy.
