I've just discovered that I am co-habiting with a twot-cocker. this may put an end to marital harmony.

Now I'm wondering if there's geographical, class or gender factor influencing the pronunciation of twatcock. Research topic anyone?

I seem to be in the minority with pronouncing the 'a' in twatcock like the one in hat - it just seems to come out angrier that way.

I'm also rather liking commisibration which Emma has been using quite a bit lately. And, #eqnz related, chimney as in what none of us have anymore.

  • Hard News: What about that Welfare…,

I can't help wondering how many even of those who claim to wish to stay on the dole mean it and how many are saying that as a means of face-saving. Get turned down for you 10th or hundredth job application and it may be easier to say 'I didn't really try". don't want you friends to know about your mental illness and it may be easier to claim you are faking a physical one. Not to mention you spend long enough out of the workforce and it's very easy to believe that you are not capable of working.

  • Hard News: The Engagement,

This morning, as the happy couple were discussing starting a family on Nat Rad I inadvertently found myself picturing Prince William engaged in sexual congress. The mental image was so profoundly unerotic that I’m not sure I will feel any kind of urges ever again.

    Wilt indeed.

  • Up Front: That's Inappropriate!, in reply to Jackie Clark,

If the young woman is, as the DomPost editorial suggests, heading in the wrong direction, then telling her she looks like a slut isn't helping her. It hinders her perception of self. And as educators, we should be looking at how we can broaden a child's horizons, not limit them.

Beautifully put (as usual) Jackie. As I was reading I was thinking of my adolescent self and how many time I took the "If you think that's what I am, that's what I'll be" route.

Now that I've figured out how to turn down the brightness on my new monitor so that all the white is no longer searing my eyeballs, I think I like it.

Lovely - whenever you write about them I am struck with the urge to hang out with your boys and listen to their charming wisdom.

Carol My guys have never read Footrot Flats but we get "What the..!" pretty often. Due to the influence of Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men the other exclamations of choice around here are "crivens" and "Oh waily waily".

  • Speaker: My People,

I'd love to live in a world where parents are equally supported whether they choose to be in paid work fultime, parttime or not at all and where caring for young, elderly, ill or disabled family members and friends was considered as high status a vocation as, say, investment banking.

  • Speaker: Dancing with Dingoes, Part I,

I did ballet for a year. I wanted spangles and tutus but what I got were plain black leotards. For our annual recital I got to be a mouse in a costume made from a size 8 singlet dyed grey. At the end of the year I was told I was too shite to do sit the exam and quit in defeat and humiliation shortly afterwards. I'm not bitter. Honest.
