  • Voting Local 2010,

Hmm... I suspect TVone just breached (or tried to?) a suppression order... but in a way subtle enough to not get charged?

On the topic of the above mentioned super-city voting irregularities...

They showed a man being arrested by police but with his head blurred out... but it was obvious, despite the blurring, that the top of the head of the person arrested was a burgundy colour... not a common colour for hair, but somewhat common for turbans?

Then, the reporter gave more details on the story whilst standing next to an election hoarding for three candidates where the candidates were clearly named (and easily identifiable on the news coverage).. one of them wearing a burgundy coloured turban, one a obviously different coloured turban, and a third with no head covering...

Now, of course, that could all be a complete coincidence, and maybe we're not supposed to put 2 and 2 together?

I'd suggest that if they DIDNT attempt to breach that order then they defamed someone?

Unless of course, I'm just being a Paul Henriesque biggot for drawing any conclusions at all?

P.S. all the above is mentioned assuming you are already aware of previous reporting on the subject... where the reports have frequently mentioned "Indians", "Indian sounding names", candidates with "Indian sounding names" and other dog-whistles along similar lines...

  • Legal Beagle: He is Henry the Eighth, he…,

I saw that this morning and I was dismayed but not surprised at the stupidity on show... (because it is Paul Henry, after-all)

What really surprised me was when he was talking to Key about polling of the supercity mayoralty suggesting Brown was clearly ahead of Banks..... and his questions were clearly of the "what can we do to get the correct candidate, our blue boy, back in the lead of that nasty left leaning oik" variety.

Mr Key did at least make "well, it's up to the people of Auckland to decide" type noises... but I thought he could have made a slightly stronger statement like "You might think you know who I'd prefer to win, but as Prime-minister I cant be seen to take sides"

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

I'll say this very slowly and for the last time.

    Thats fine, and I agree...

All I meant was that I saw or heard a different report on the same meeting, that mentioned names only, and concluded (incorrectly?) it was a different person being referred to. I thought actors equity spokesperson Francis Walsh was at the meeting.

That clarifying differentiator would have cleared it up for me.
Other, better differentiators that you've proposed could also have done the same...

Nobody gets full marks, but more marks go to the writer who got me to know who was actually at the meeting, even if they were sexist, condescending or similar other failures.

(p.s. for the clarity of others... Craig was responding to my earlier comment which I thought I'd retracted before anyone got to see it- sorry)

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

I see my point was addressed before I posted... so I've removed my own inadequate ramblings on the topic.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

May I suggest that anyone in Auckland who objects to paying GST on their fruit and veg (or banana pancakes for that matter) simply do their shopping at the Avondale or Otara markets?

Just because you pay cash and get no receipt is no reason to presume the stall-holders are not meeting all their legal obligations... they could well be accounting and claiming for their costs and declaring their takings for GST and other purposes... :)

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

Is a peanut a fresh, unprocessed fruit or vegetable?

Well, it's not animal or mineral... it grows on a tree.

Is it fresh? I'm not sure, but I doubt things that were fresh but have aged are going to suddenly attract tax after they've been in the supermarket for a day or three? :)

Either Hide is telling porkies or he's just an incompetent idiot.

It doesnt have to be an either/or situation... both could be true. :)

    Lets see now...

You're new at this politics thing, so before going for office, you run your dirty secrets past your party leader, who says thats ok, well just keep it quiet...

But then you get publicly found out, and your party leader dumps you because he couldnt possibly support you for things he's known about all along?

Rodney's doing a good job of making Garrett look to be not the lowest or most reprehensible person in ACT...
