He predicted that we would do badly at university
When I skipped seventh form, I got the same predictions that I would fail horribly. (If you're reading, teachers at Rangitoto College in the early 1990s: thanks so much for all the encouragement.) Was this some sort of generally agreed teaching standard? It seems to have happened to lots of us. 'Crush the spirits of the ones who want to leave!'

The Worm! The Worm!
Heh. I liked watching the reflexive Pavlovian uptick when either candidate said 'our troops'.

Until now, it was just you and Danielle.
Sigh. Am I that predictable? :)
(The 'Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' clip belongs to that great 'going out into the desert to pose meaningfully in chaps or chaps-influenced pants' school of music videos, doesn't it?)

Jolisa, you have my undying devotion for the namechecking of Gerald McBoing-Boing.
Also, the intense cuteness: it burns.

No shotguns (!), no crossbows (!!), but speaking of 'objectively rather mad things you do which make sense at the time', I once told a young (but large enough) dude trying to mug me as I walked to university in Baton Rouge that no, I would not be giving him any of my money, and no, I did not believe that the fingers pointed at me from under his shirt were actually a gun. Insanely, he agreed with me (quite pleasantly!) and went on his merry way. What was I *thinking*? He could *easily* have beaten me up. I think I was just so incensed/surprised at my space being invaded that I spoke with enough authority to fend him off.

From the NYT magazine article:
When a student observed the death of Jam Master Jay of the hip-hop group Run-DMC by wearing the group’s trademark tracksuit to the racism seminar, Obama acknowledged the gesture with a nod and a smile.
That makes me feel all warm inside.

Friday Night Lights: if you haven't seen it, the movie starring Billy Bob Thornton, which was based on the book, is good sporting-movie stuff too.
I like the show, but I have two nits to pick: clearly, hardly any of those people are from anywhere near small-town Texas, and they have *wildly* varying accents. (Of course, those in the know tell me that lots of people on Coronation Street don't 'talk right' either.) My other issue is not exactly about everyone being 'too pretty' - that's sort of a given in these shows - but that everyone is *way* too well-dressed. These people should be wearing clothes from Wal-Mart, dammit! At least the coach is wearing those awful khaki shorts...

James, will you come to my next party? I think it would be really fun to play a 'How Can James Manage To Blame Any Conceivable Problem On Clinton?' drinking game.

There's a transcript too if you want to read it.
I'm at page 14 and I've understood it all so far! Thanks Robyn.

Guys, I think the time has come to buy chooks.
Pfffft. I don't need anything but my Kilo of Coffee For Being a Huge Nerd to survive this crisis!
(Thanks Russell.)
That Powerpoint explained everything very clearly and yet I still don't really understand, because complex financial things freak me out. Was it all just a big pyramid scheme? Or...?
