Also, it drives me nuts.
Yeah. In fairness, that's not exclusive, by any means, to the feminists. But we do have a lot of words to throw around.
There was a great example on one of the local blogs recently, (which I won't link to) of someone querying the use of the term mansplaining, and the writer not taking to kindly to it, and basically bullying the commenter into submission.
Which, if that's the kind of thing you want, why have comments at all?

And its kind of proof of how highly I regard this place that I just openly said that. Because I am pretty sure I just sold out the feminist blogosphere. Ah well, most of them already hate me.

Mostly taunting, but still often not in good faith.
Hey, I figure if David can goad his commenters into saying things he wants them to, a little bit of taunting just fits the tone of the place.

It is more productive to address what someone is saying than to reflexively exclude them with an insult based on what you thought they said ages ago about a different issue.
This is my problem with most internet arguments. It's why I hate "mansplaining" and "privilege" and all that wank*. You actually can attack an argument without attacking a person.

* Very important concepts, rendered mostly useless by people using them to shut out debate.

Oh, I'd like to see him try.

I must admit, reading it back all this time later, it's a lot funnier than I remember it being at the time. But yes, I think "condescending" and "should spend more time coding" ring truest.

You get the culture you breed, twonkface.
That did end up being a very fun conversation, in the end, purely because it demonstrated so perfectly how to be an asshat.
I had to acknowledge to myself that I was basically trolling a lot of the time at Kiwiblog. Didn't seem right.
I too find that hard to believe.

On a sadder note I’d finally plucked up courage to go to an OGB and got permission, but you put it on a Thursday – conspiracy I say !!!
Yeah, I was considering coming up, because I had such a great time at the last one, but Thursday makes it problematic. *shakes fist*

It is in a basket with Kiwiblog to me. The energy it takes me to forget the comments isn't worth the nuggets of wisdom.

The Standard’s Lyn Prentice declared moderation an “easy” job that took him a mere 30 minutes after work each day
Yeah, and that's why a lot of us, especially, I suspect women, don't read The Standard. He is also the dude who is So Very Busy counting his stats and Not Moderating, that he had a whole day to tell me in very many ways how very wrong I was, and why The Standard is, "the biggest megaphone in the blogosphere". So, you know, grain of salt.
I can’t believe I didn’t find time to make more of how active and comfortable women are in these forums, and what a useful influence that is.
There's been a lot of conversations (to make it all about the girls) recently, about how the feminists on the internet aren't very nice to each other. It's been highlighted in Emma's last few posts how it doesn't actually have to be that way, and how people actually can be polite, while still disagreeing. That's all down to you guys as writers and moderators, and it's a really important thing. So, yes, you should have made more of it. :)
