  • Hard News: Reasons to be cheerful,

This sucks. I thought it was bad enough that I'll be having to pass through there soon but to hear that it might have been a totally innocent victim puts a real downer on it.

For the cricket tragics out there I've put together a bit of a statistical analysis of Blackcaps batsmen from roughly the last decade and compared the first half of their test career with their second half average wise.

I call it The Bracewell Effect. Movie to be released soon (in Australian sporting theatres first).

But you could try looking up 4th down plays and where they were unsuccessful

I would hazard a guess that by far the most often scenario for a failed 4th down is where a team has run the ball needing a yard or less and failed to get it or at the end of the game where they trailed by more than 3 going into the last couple of minutes.

I know that from time to time the punter fluffs it and spills the ball or the snap is errant but by and large they get through most games without missing a beat.

  • Field Theory: Every guy does it,

I can't find stats on how often they get tackled or even mention of it in articles (only looked for quarter of an hour though) but provided they take the ball cleanly they should not get near beign tackled. When they are in the motion of kicking they aren't allowed to be touched. So the only real way they can be is if the snap goes awol and then they recover it, or they drop the ball and recover it. In which case they are fucked but it doesn't happen all that often.

Good to see my educated guess was right. 32 place kickers? (P/K) in the league making more than a million US (looking at the total salary column). Even their reserve punters are around a million NZ a season.

Here's an intereating article on how often these guys have to make a tackle. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/27/sports/football/27kickers.html?pagewanted=all

The crazy ones who actually try to make tackles manage around 2-3 a season. Jeff Feagles at the Giants actively avoids any contact whatsoever and has made 11 tackles in the past 15 years.

    An article on injuries... http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/specialreports/specialnfl/s_291033.html
One out of five punters suffers some kind of an injury each year. I'll take those odds and the million bucks thanks. ;)

Now to put my two year old to bed. Probably far more hazardous to my health.

    @ Blair.

The guy punting the ball has to kick it as far as he can when they are stuck down their own end but usually they have to get the ball to stop before crossing the opposition touchdown line because if it does then the defending team gets to bring it back to the 20 yard line. They also have to get enough hangtime on the ball so that there defenders can get down and belt the hell out of the punt returner. It's usually pretty devastating if he gets a head of steam up.

All that said I reckon I could just about make an NFL 'punter'. They probably make a million a year and get tackled once a decade. A bloke in the Steelers game the otherday barely touched a defender as he came down after punting and was awarded a 15 yard penalty. It was a joke. Talk about protected species. Steve Price would be screwed with his knee breaking kick charge downs.

Perhaps some people are being a little more discreet and selective about where they do their smacking?

In Korea where I lived for four years and holidayed again recently I can honestly say I have NEVER seen an adult hit a child in public (not to say others haven't seen plenty of it but it all escaped me by and I got out and about a lot). Plenty of domestic violence though, unfortunately condoned more than here. Behind closed doors stuff.

I don't recall seeing adults hitting kids here recently but then again I found it relatively rare to see it before the law change.

That should read "woman". How can I explain the difference to my students when I balls it up myself.

Just out of interest, what ads are out there with a clear focus on females with regard to behaviour or thought process? My memory is about as reliable as my students. There's the domestic violence ones targetting men, the depression ones with John Kirwan, all the drink driving and speeding ones targetting men. I can think of the sunburn one showing a women with melanoma ??? is there a need to look at the sum of what is appearing on TV and maybe mix things up a bit? That might come across as being token in some cases but as a male it can be a bit negative seeing how freakin dumb NZ males must be on the tellie several times every night. Mind you I could always watch the news and see how dumb males are the world over every night.

An idle question for an idle tuesday mind.
