  • Up Front: The Ex Files,

Wasn't it pineapple lumps per picosecond?

I find it really hard to tease the good and bad apart in memories. Often the shitty times were either the logical end to something that had been wonderful or the catalyst to something better or the times I discovered my own strength (mind you this is coming from someone who has had very little that is truly awful happen to them)

OTOH, in the context of painfully limited world of hip-hop party videos, it's almost cinema verité.

I think I find the sort of depiction where everyone and everything is gorgeous and glamourous less "off" somehow - maybe it's easier to suspend disbelief for a whole fantasy than a partial one?

Also that thing with the girls in the vid... I'm all for girls being sexeh on my laptop screen but in this case the guys in the vid were just guys being ordinary people and the girls were being sexy. Too much contrast for it to look like anything other than objectification. Though that word looks more loaded than what I mean.

I think you've put your finger on the thing that was non-specifically bugging me. It looks far more like some boy's fantasy than a party anyone has ever really thrown.

  • Up Front: Romeo Smells of Roses,

My birth-certificate has a space for the father's occupation and the mother's maiden name - interesting considering that my mother was back at work when I was six weeks old and my father spent five years working from home and taking care of me. My kids' birth certificates list neither of parent's occupations and have spaces for any other names either of us may have borne.

  • Up Front: Also, The Rain Isn't Gone,

I don't think there's anything funky with my uterus (someone would have noticed somewhere over the course of two pregnancies surely) and my cervix has been perfectly well locatable on other occasions but, that one time, it took two nurses, a doctor and a lot of waving my legs in the air.

To add to the list of things you don't want to hear whilst on the examining table:

"Could you come and give me a hand, I can't seem to find this lady's cervix"

May explain why I am a tad bit overdue for a smear.

  • Up Front: Also, The Rain Isn't Gone,

I've worn contact lenses since I was 16 and can be amazingly quick with them when need be but now i have totally magic ones that stay in for a month at a stretch which is even better - no fumbling about in the mornings. I take them out to swim because I've lost some in the pool before. I have to say that shortsightedness has greatly reduced my ability to enjoy watersports which is a reason I might consider laser surgery at some stage.

I've never minded optometry care - it's all sort of mysterious and gadgetty. I did mind, hugely, though the time my optometrist needed to turn my eyelid inside out.

I think I sneaked through a few vision tests at school because they tested my good eye first and then did the bad eye with the same chart so I was able to operate on memory.

  • Busytown: A wee development,

I bribed my oldest with stickers and chocloate but as soon as I tried to phase out the rewards he (very sensibly in hindsight) went on strike. With my second I resolved not to do the reward thing. Thankfully he was a fan of naked afternoons and, with very minimal parental input, figured it out all by himself.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

My kid goes to a "special character" state school which seems like a far better answer to the "choice" thing than having private schools really.
