  • Hard News: The Vision Thing,

I sat in on a private discussion of the ideas in this speech at this year's Kiwi Foo Camp. It was Shearer who ordained the discussion, but Cunliffe who demonstrated a grasp of policy and a striking articulacy in talking about...

Did RB contribute to the speech writing???

  • Hard News: A storm in any port,

Here is how you convince folk to privatise any (already) efficient business.

1} Fire the workers and contract the place out.
2} Convince the organisation to increase it's levies so that private business can compete.

ACC Chairman appears to be surprised as well:

Mr Judge was also scathing about a Cabinet paper produced by former ACC Minister Nick Smith in which Dr Smith suggested the ACC charge employers "a surplus margin" for work account cover to allow private insurers to compete more readily with it.

I think Smithy needs another holiday from the strain.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk,

Anyone read the fascinating article in today's SST by Greg Ninness about the source of the data that has been bandied about re the "efficiency" of Port Auckland???

And the front page headline about the local body per person debt??

    Conspiracy warning ahead:

Is there - or is there starting - a concerted effort by someone to plant the seed for the next round of local body shinnanigans.

These happenings seem a wee bit too cute.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk,

At least we have stronger controls on the use of military personnel as strike-breakers than existed in 1951

But we are fast running out of soldiers to do the dirty work....Race horses and their owners might be all that could be called to be the next generation of Massey's cossacks.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk,

    Insider:

No-one would give a stuff if I were cashed up and sold that NZ money in return for Ferraris. But sell a business to the Germans and I'm suddenly handing over a piece of the country.

Given the number of repossessions that occur in this country, I suspect that most Ferraris are "bought" on higher purchase.

You are right. Noone would give a stuff. But if you had bought something more useful like a Suzuki Swift, the change from the transaction could be used to invest here in NZ.

And that is where we are failing. We are quite happy to sell out to overseas interests but it means we have less chance of improving our future.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk,

We the taxpayer don’t own any local lines.

We did. Once. And if you want an example of how "spreading the wealth" worked when it was divested then you will find no better example. $1500 worth of line shares vamoosed into the hands of the few within days. Once the limit was reached the rest were forcibly stolen. And now Gerry wants Chch to sell their cash cow which they kept rather than flog off.

    Ideology. Pure and rancidly simple.

What time is the revolt gathering to begin my brothers and sisters??

  • Hard News: It's In the Kete!,

1960. Maramarua Hall. Selwyn and the bag turned up. They had a very slick - and small - entourage that ran it. It was the radio version that had a sound guy, a hand waving director guy, Selwyn and the assistant whose name escapes me. All the gear was packed into one car and he was off late to the next town. He did tell us that there were people in the crowd who had been to previous shows and he recognised them. But his system of sorting the contestants meant he was able to rid most of them by hook or by crook. The hall was packed for about the three hours it took to set up sort/pick contestants, record, have half time, finish and clap frantically for the hand waving guy and wind it up. And then we waited.... waited... waited to hear the show broadcast which to a kid seemed like years.

    NZ's got talent?

We are SO good at kicking someone who is doing their best. Oh...and those who reach up above. Whack! Hah! Another poppy.

Rumour: Brent McKenzie uses ghost writers. He must have. Real Kiwi's can't do that.
