  • Busytown: Age cannot wither me,

    @ Fletch
Thank you! Bet you had a hard time finding a school hall for your bang-up birthday party?

As came up in an earlier thread, it was actually quite easy!

The trick is, I knew the date of my party before Labour knew the date of the election. (or at least, publicly admitted to it).

When you have people traveling from overseas, and friends who need to book baby-sitters, two months is the least possible planning you can get away with, and six months works better.

But I guess I am lucky that my chosen (semi-remote) party place has not just a community hall, but also two other bookable halls ... while I chose one that isnt the regular voting place (by luck, not design), I'm not 100% confidant that I wouldnt have had my booking "bumped" in favor of big brother, if there'd been less choice in the area? And that really would have left me in a pickle...

  • Busytown: Age cannot wither me,

    Jolisa,

I've been reading your blogs for years, and have enjoyed reading about busy-(not-so-much a)-tot and the others... mainly because you are just six or so months ahead of me on the child-rearing path..... so many times I've seen a new development in my young boy, and thought... oh-yes, I just read about this....

Anyway I'm now thrilled, and consoled to discover we are near equal in age too.... although your birthday is technically nearer than mine... the Herald gives me a daily front-page count-down to mine... which is quite foreboding in its own way.

Apparently the politicians are all trying to gain my favor, and the entire nation is waiting with bated breath for my 40th.... and some other thing :)

I feel I'm supposed to be worried about another entering decade, or at least the election results... but mainly I'm just getting excited at the prospect of a party with good friends and family from overseas...

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

The whole point of their higher rates of interest is that it's meant to reflect the higher risk associated with where their investments lie

But the rates they actually offered to investors were not that much higher than the banks... many of them maybe 1-2 % higher from recollection... So having heard that return reflect risk, you might assume that a return "close" to a banks would also be a risk close to a banks.... which as history has shown, was a poor conclusion to draw.

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

Traveling in, amongst other places, Nashville, it was frequent and actually charming to have your nationality and similar enquired about from nearly every shop assistant, waitress, bank teller, etc. that you ran across in your daily business...

Some had a reasonable idea what or where NZ was, others less so. But when one complemented me on how well I spoke english, I just burst out laughing... and then politely let him know that I was glad I spoke it well, as it was the only language I knew.... And although it did cross my mind at the time, a strange and unexpected bit if discretion withheld the words "and I speak it better than you" from crossing my lips.

@3410... maybe I'm being thick... I'm not seeing how that is any more problematic than if its not the case.

(completely ignoring the fact that Youtube is (now) working in cahoots with copyright holders and taking stuff down, so that at least in theory, you cant see copyrighted material via youtube)

  • Hard News: Inimical to the public good,

Is watching a YouTube is considered downloading?

For you to view information on your screen, it has to have got into your computer-box somehow.

If that somehow was over the internets, it's "downloading"

Sorry Steve, thats not the median

the median is the value of the middle sample .... 10, 10, 100 gives a median of 10... because it's the middle sample.

IF there were an even number of samples, then you could average the middle two samples only... 10, 10, 20, 100 gives a median of 15.

As well, anyone presently receiving Working for Families tax cuts (or any government assistance) will not qualify for the Nats tax cuts.

Are you 100% sure on that?

My reading suggests the Nat tax package is made up of two elements....
    1) changes to rates and thresholds
    2) the "independant earner" rebate.

I'm fairly sure It's only that second part that thats not available to WFF? Or have I fallen for the spin?
