  • Island Life: Let’s learn English, with…,

Ok.... I'm going to play devil's advocate....

English and Lockwood have been caught saying "Just wait, we'll do something more to your liking later"

So far, theres been a 100% assumption that the "lie" has been public and the "truth" is private...

Could it not be the other way around?

Might not a genuinely centrist politician want to try and placate more extreme supporters and keep them on-side if they thought they were in danger of defecting?

  • Island Life: The hide of a politician,

What I liked about that was not so much the sleazy or begging aspect, but just Bob's response....

I wish that I was in a financial position where giving someone annoying you over a couple of drinks a mere $25k instead of the $50k+ they were pestering you for seemed like a reasonable "just leave me alone"...

Me? If you make a really excellent tit of yourself, and genuinely harass me... I might give you $5 to piss off.... but you'd have to be world class to get that much.

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

crap to quality ratio for adaptations of his work is even worse than Stephen King's

I've been told the rough rule of thumb goes like this....

If the screenplay/script of a movie based on a Stephen King novel is also written by Stephen King..... its probably crap.

If the screenplay is written by someone else, its probably OK.

I take no responsibility for the accuracy of that.... it was passed on to me by a writer/film reviewer about a decade ago.

  • Busytown: If you build it...,

Paul, seeing as you loved the TV series.... As you are in Sydney you may not be aware that it's just this year been released on DVD... I saw it advertised just this weekend.

It's a TVNZ title and should be available at any good (NZ) DVD retailer, including online ones. (www.realgroovy.co.nz) for example.

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

Though I do think 'plum spot' can be put down to hack reaching for fundamentally meaningless cliché, rather than some sinister move by the VRWMC.

I was merely pointing to the crap-nes and lack of info in that particular Joyce article... so maybe basically we agree?

I was not trying to suggest the lack of info was intentional or otherwise part of a vast conspiracy... which, in light of the general trend of this thread, I can see how that might have been implied or inferred.

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

Or I guess the Herald can just make shit up. Would that be OK with you, Fletcher?

No... you've told me something I wasnt aware of.... that the list hasnt been ordered yet.... thankyou. Maybe the herald could have told me that instead?

I thought lists, and placements on them were a fairly major part of MMP.... so when you report on someone getting a "plum spot" it might be important to know the number..... or it might not be as plum as is being implied by the article.

I wouldnt call #70 "plum", would you? How does the Herald know its a good spot if they DONT know the number?

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

More in depth reporting from the Herald....

That piece on Joyce's "plum spot" on the list..... doesnt actually mention WHICH spot it is....

It mentions that it's one of only 5 list-only spots for a National candidate.... but completely fails to mention exactly HOW plum it is.... #1? #70? No clue from that article...

  • Cracker: How about You You You?,

Well, I was using non-plussed to mean unimpressed, which as you point out is not correct (whoops)... so I'll do a quick duck-and-cover and say I was suggesting the children were bewildered at all the fuss being made by the grow-ups... yeah, that works doesnt it?

My own kids show much more interest in the animals now... somewhere between 3 and 5 I'd say is the change? But it's also very changeable... they may be interested today but not tomorrow..... the season pass is a wonderful thing.

I sometimes wonder if we dont set ourselves up for the whole small-children non-plussed at the zoo thing. (I've seen it myself many times over)

I mean, we bombard them with story-books and kids TV where hippos, elephants, monkeys, etc. are completely normal run of the mill things, then we drag them along to the zoo and expect them to be excited to see these things they see represented in thier daily lives.....

Would us grown-ups be all that excited to see a display of a kitchen with un-washed dishes and a work-desk with some paperwork on it? Maybe throw in a live person in a business suit?

The zoo is exciting for us big people because its so different and bizarre.... I think maybe little kids dont appreciate quite how special it is until they are a bit older and more exposed to what is "normal".

On a different topic.... I'm not so sure you need to use so many "alleged/allegedly" when the accused isnt actually denying it was him or what was done.... but is simply trying to avoid legal responsibility for it?

  • Hard News: Just Some Things,

    Happy birthday to you....

I feel the inexplicable need to exclaim that I am not from Lesbos, but I do like women...

Also, I dont know exactly what a loinge is, but maybe what you do in it or to it, should not be shared with the public?
