  • Damian Christie,

This is still my favourite skanking remix of that Sharon Jones track, a few years old now.

I thought I'd post this in the comments so you can click to embiggen the pic.

Again, thanks to Simon Grigg, who explained on Facebook:

The Screaming Meemees, Sweetwaters 1983, about 8.30 on the Saturday night. It was taken by Greg Peacocke from the lighting tower and you can see both Adam Holt and Charlotte Dawson in the crowd if you hunt (near the front). I'm on the left-hand side on the side of the stage standing next to Greg Carroll.

And how about that old-school concert PA!? They don't make 'em like that any more. Nigel Russell provided the detail in the comments:

64 x Cerwin Vega D32 and 32 x D18 stroker subs with flares (designed in NZ by Rainton Hastie's brother Dean). Was Oceania's main rig till the early 90s

  • Howard Edwards,

Love that Collision track - play that funky music indeed!

Reminds me of the 70s sound that bands like Ticket and Quincy Conserve had.

  • Tim Michie,

Just a little mention of the BBC Proms David Bowie Tribute 7:00pm this evening. I've checked and they RNZ do not have web hosting rights so it's listen then or miss this thang (although there a couple of youtubers at the linked site). Should you miss it RNZ hardly lacks for Bowie related material tho'.

Hat-tip Ana Samways (I swear, most days the only reason I hit the NZH site) for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nDIcbPL43g. I was reliably advised Dee Snider is grand cool: Proof.

  • Hugh Wilson,

I second, third, fourth and more the thoughts on Audioculture & Simon’s efforts in driving the site, and particularly the securing of public funding. It really is a tremendous resource, and its uniqueness well illustrated by absence of a similar initiative in Australia (aside from Milesago, which has some content but is nowhere as rich, not as pervasive (for want of a better word) and somewhat self-evidently runs on a shoestring and love http://www.milesago.com/ )

And I still chuckle at the thought of Taste records having an outlet in Parnell, near where the tennis shop used to be, something I’m only aware of (despite having grown up there) via Simon’s stories. One of my Blerta LP’s has a Taste sticker inside the sleeve, and I’ve been advised it was probably sold via the more liberal Lorne st shop of olde …

Found the Collision LP at a record fair in Essendon, Melbourne about three years ago … happened to come across a second copy at the same fair (for a measly $18) but like a right plonker I left it behind. Haven’t seen another one since ..

The speaker comment reminds me that NZ company Perreaux used to be in the speaker game - theres a really impressive image of, I think, Ticket in the 70's with some and they were jaw dropping .. will see if I can find it

On the music tip, I enjoyed this clip of Mark De Clive Lowe posted by Cut Chemist, doing the ethiocali thing:

    A Gangsta Luv remix too:

And RIP to Rudy Van Geller, the legendary jazz engineer:

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Last week I left this comment: "I've always thought that Golden Harvest's seductive "I Need Your Love" would just need the lightest remix to sound like a cool track of 2016."

    This week IT HAPPENED!

Perreaux used to be in the speaker game

They seem to think they still are :) I was quite impressed by their amps back in the day, but my current audiophile budget is limited to headphones. Would still like a nice pair of speakers etc in a dedicated listening room, ideally with a pair of young ears to appreciate them with.

"packed weight 152kg per crate"... that's forklift territory.

  • TracyMac,

I'm glad that my musical taste isn't stuck where it was when I was 25 either - I get bewildered at people younger than me who think the 80s/early 90s was the best. It wasn't (there is no "best", unless you strictly like some genre that isn't done any more - one good friend of mine remains devoted to hair metal).

That said, Kanye, other than a couple of tracks, epitomises style over substance to me. I like a lot of Beyonce's stuff, but not enough to buy an entire album. On the other hand, I think Lady Gaga (where is she hiding?) blows Madonna at her peak out of the water. She can sing, for a start. Longevity may be something else.

Getting to the main topic, Audioculture is a true taonga, and I'm grateful to Simon for getting the ball rolling, and the site so well established.

Stone finishing? What beasts. Very proud too of NZ's Plinius being the reference amp other manufacturers use. And I'd love to meet a rimu Theophany speaker sometime. Sigh.

As was the case in other sectors, the impact of New Zealand's restrictive import regulations was broad: it resulted in quite shitty and very good products. Plinius (founded 1980) and Perreaux have held on with quality.

some genre that isn't done any more - one good friend of mine remains devoted to hair metal

I'd be more surprised to genuinely find a genre that isn't still going in some form. Every one I can think of has mutated, diversified and is still going, albeit for most of them well below the radar of anyone outside their particular niche. It's not news to most people that house, r'n'b, hip-hop, metal, and rock are still alive and well, because they are the mainstream, or there is at least significant bleed-through. But some of the others? Goth? Still going. Industrial? Still going. Goa? Still goa-ing. Hell, most of these sub-sub-sub-genres even seem to have thier own festivals these days - not only are there half-a-dozen metal festivals in the UK, but if those are too mainstream for you, there's a specialist 3-day desert metal fest, AND a specialist 3-day tech/glitch metal fest.

Hair metal ain't my thing, but even it is (was) having a minor resurgence in the form of 'The Darkness', 'Steel Panther', and a handful of other recent acts.

  • Mike O'Connell,

Did anyone catch Kirstin Johnstone's interview yesterday with King Loser on Music 101? A 'must listen' - interesting for the music they've made but also the inter-relationships and where they've been since the mid-90s.I couldn't as of writing find the interview podcast. Since RNZ had a refresh of its pages, Music101 is not what it used to be, how can I say, it's less logical.

But anyhow, a fair bit of interview was spent with Chris (Heazlewood) talking about the dark spaces he's been in, something perhaps some of us can relate to ( I know I can) and how he is close but not quite there yet in getting out - but keen as mustard to get out on the road for upcoming live shows. Celia (Mancini/Pavlova) was also present but on a different line, joining someway through - weird, Both pretty open of what they've been through. Not surprisingly, a lot of feedback was received during show. If I find it (podcast) I'll post link to it.

Can't wait for their upcoming shows. Let's hope they keep it together. Here's an interview (posted by Peter McClennan) from Frenzy (TV3) in 1994 - features a nod by the band to 'the contemporary blues men of Northeast Valley' - Peter Gutteridge, George Henderson and David Kilgour!

Also, another (short) bit of KL manic noise, recorded in 1993 with one Shayne P Carter on 2nd guitar. Not sure what the song is...

Just an update on the Flying Nun event at WORD Christchurch on Saturday: it went very well – the performances especially.

Jay Clarkson played The 3Ds' 'Spooky',, Graeme played 'Dunedin Spleen', Hollie played a song from her Hamish Kilgour collab Hurtling Through and they all played JPSE's 'Shiver' in tribute to the late Jim Laing.

And then Graeme and Hollie decided they should play some more songs (like we were gonna say no) and went one-for-on for more than half an hour while Roger signed books, concluding with Graeme playing a beautiful version of '10 O'Clock in the Afternoon'.

Here's Roger signing books while Hollie plays.

I'm a bit conflicted about King Loser. Some glorious music, but the personal toll has been tough. Will listen with interest.

The plan had been to go to the Spinoff's late-night salon, but I realised I have access to smartarse Aucklanders any time. Going back to Graeme's hotel room and drinking some whisky ... that was family.

Shout-outs to Hollie, who was incredibly tolerant of the old folks yakking about the old days.
