  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

    Fox pass...

    Blimmin' progress.

    So true...
Once the shelves come off the walls I'd have serious worries about the integrity of the building (which is to be earthquake strengthened next)...
and I did find a few bookish gems as we went along, heck I even got a really nice old Epidiascope that had probably languished unseen for many years...
Surprisingly I didn't see one silverfish (that's silverfush to kiwis...) I suspect they have fled, sussurating into the cold streets of the City That Doesn't Care searching for the starch that keeps Christchurch so stiff...

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

I suppose it leaves print comics in the same place as vinyl LPs, which still sell.

I'm about to sell a whole bunch of comics, but looking at Trade Me it seems the only comics getting bids are mostly Commando comics for some reason, of which I have none...

OTOH, it really is a great comics experience.

I still think a comic is the artefact, this new method of engaging is another interface experience altogether - but I'll see if I can find an iPad
with it sometime just to check it out... :- )

...and having just spent the past 4 days taking all the books out of the old three floors Smith's Bookshop site* - I can't help thinking my back
would feel better if they'd all been digitised...
...and I am impressed by the number of bananas eaten in Chch!
as I managed to find enough banana boxes from helpful supermarkets every day (apart from South City New World who wanted 70c a box!!) to keep the outflow of books at a steady pace...
    I guess you'd say I was a Dole© Bludger...

*worry not bibliophiles, they have only moved half a block to a single floor site at 117 Manchester Street, with a lot less dross...

  • Hard News: Fridays are for Music,

    Good shooting from Fraser Gunn

the milky Way in all its glory, fabulous - I heard a wonderful piece on Nat Radio recently about saving this area for astronomy - a visitor from New York
(I believe) on seeing the night sky at Tekapo saying words to the effect of "I thought you said it would be clear, there's clouds all over the sky!" ...

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

    panel beaters ...

Of course. I would point out that the comics press seems to have warmly embraced the Marvel Comics app on the iPad. I think graphic media are going to work really well on this device.

but can you print from the iPad?

can one on-sell a bought digital comic?

and where will that leave comic collectors?

it was bad enough when pulp-paper editions and
    Ben Day dots disappeared...

I guess comics may become truly ephemeral...

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

What this looks like is an attack on the use of sick leave. "If you're not dying, you'd better be at work." This is directly contrary to evidence that it's better not to have unwell people at work, in order to get them back to peak-productivity faster and reduce the risk of cross-infection.
How does this improve productivity, exactly? Appears pretty counter-productive to me.

    Damn straight!

What will happen with the next Flu pandemic - or lesser outbreak - lotsa sick people in the staff room - here's hoping The Masque of The Red Death visits the Poe-Faced managers...

  • Hard News: Wanna Route?,

    waterwheels...

I've ridden to the bach on Waiheke.

From Avondale? I'm guessing you put extra air
in the tyres and added the outrigger training pontoons...
    ;- )

obey the cycles of the moon...

I should note that I have also got over my qualms about lycra, and now own...

good to know that you lycranthropes (aka wear wolves) are well served by Kathmandu
My brother swears by Ground Effect clothing.

Unstill Life - go to whoah...
boingboing habitués will have already seen this fabulous evolutionary progression, (it's Vimeo so can't just paste in) a fine living graffiti approach - maybe they could do summat like this on "the Shed that has to die" before it disappears...
    anyway, enjoy...

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

Dammit, there goes my idea for a TV pilot called CSI: CFS

still hope for the pilot of:
    It's all about ME
    (The Chronic Ills of Tapanui)

    :- )

I'm not wishing to make light of this condition,
but I'd always hoped the alleged meteor strike above Tapanui in the 1500s hadn't been so effectively dismissed – aided by a notable of this virtual parish no less ;- ) – I'd had this fantasy about a Colour out of Space -type origin for "Tapanui Flu"...

  • Cracker: P is for Politics.,

    knife flaw...
a new shop at my local mall is dedicated to swords and knives - probably cheap knock offs, but could still cause some injury i'm sure...
and the spotty youths gathered about it didn't look like sedentary weapons collectors...
    a slice of Evan anyone?

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth...

...and gave up on dentists 2 decayeds ago.

    that scores with me!
it should be on a plaque somewhere...
    :- )

    a natural bent...

The yoga has been very helpful, primarily as exercise I could do that wasn't aerobic. And I could do it at home, at my own pace, and stop when I got tired.

watched some of a piece on a back doctor on Close Up tonight and my partner noted most of the beneficial positions shown were yoga asanas any way...
(and could someone send Hoskings a comb...)
Introducing yoga to prisons might be a helpful (and low cost) initiative too...

    blood bothers...

    Autohaemotransfusion?

how is it stored? I wonder if exposure to sunlight (or other fields) might have some effect before replacing the blood in the body?

    did someone say boo...

Very much true of any immune disease. I've used hemp to great effect in the past.

    time for Autohempinfusion maybe...
