  • Hard News: And on into a whole new year,

There is something to be said for zero tolerance to tags and broken windows.
That is for the owner to paint over the tag or fix the window or be prosecuted by the council.

Confession: My mate & myself aged about 12 sprayed "Tears for Fears" on one of the Vicarage out buildings. He was the Vicars son & all his idea. I didn't mind T4F but it really doesn't lend itself to graffitti does it.
Anyway a decade or so later at a wedding I checked out the building and no sign of our crime.
I didn't expect that I would would have got a clip around the ear for that - have to clean it up sure - but a kid got stabbed & killed for tagging.

  • Hard News: Herself's Turn,

I was in Leonard Wilcox class on 9/12 - He didn't expect anyone to turn up but we all did - thinking AMST might make sense of things.

  • Hard News: Herself's Turn,

"creeping qualificationism," - well maybe but she'll be right & no.8 wire doesn't cut it anymore. I feel education is in itself its own reward.

My Mum recalls the furore when Catholic Schools went on to be State funded & the requirement Teachers had to be qualified was an outrage against the Church. This task having been done by caring or was that canning uneducated Nunns for free.

And imagine if Auckland Town Planners were education & qualified - ahh a fine dream.

I took a couple of American Studies papers in the past at Canty. Great to quote Homer in an essay. Homer Simpson that is. The Simpsons are the Shakespeare of our time.
In Shakespears time it was Greek emo stuff everyone of culture raved about.

American Studies came into conflict with a few over the concept of race. That race doesn't exist certainly was problematic for a few of the old guard.

Also AMST showed up the rest of the Arts Dept on how to teach. Online lecture notes, DVDs, and a human being to interact with. Quite a revolution.

Please don't get into "American Studies what good is that?" It's not the subject that matters as much as the process of learning.

  • Legal Beagle: The Quality of Mercy,

So the yanks use pardons as a release valve for their pressure cooker of a justice system. Fair enuf we would follow them on this as well.

Would you be in favour of US styled pardons or the rehashing of old cases being talked about at the mo?

  • Hard News: Tidbits ahoy,

Did Dr Wayne Mapp have anything to do with this new National Policy? It does seem a bit silly.

With the Army already short on numbers to run a programme like this (market forces at work).

Do we want the worst of our community to be fitter & stronger when they're turned out onto the streets?

The Limited Service Volunteers LSVs was set up for life skills for long term unemployed. It's about building people up. I'm not sure troubled youth will find it rewarding.

That said I saw a few young lives turned around in the Army but they were motivated to change.

  • Hard News: Panic,

A mate of mine was a cousin to one & a mate to others of the Ashburton suicide pact of the early 90s. So De Press have a few readers who remember that.

It really worried the parents to think kids would kill themselves and more so that they would drag their mates into it & all well before Bebo.

I was of the understanding not talking of suicide in the media was the "correct" path on the issue. So maybe De Press deserve a brick if some lonely teen goes to BeBo & tops themselves.

Has there been a change of talking about suicide in the media?

  • Legal Beagle: On the Force of Arms,

Just to quibble ... you talk of the Nuremberg Defense but interestingly you don't question the Nuremberg Prosecution and its legitamcy. Which seems to have a well known detractor.
Chen of Chen Palmer & Partners a favourite of morning TV a wee while back infamously said something to the effect of "our constitution would make it legal to kill all Maori babies & it would be legal"- hmm.

  • Hard News: Spin Spun,

A few people I know find the OIA little more than a lemon squeezer trying to get blood from a stone when dealing with the Police.
They be a menacing crew, Snail Insurgents and the like. The work is continuing at a Snails pace though :P
