  • Speaker: E Tu, Bill?,

So within a Western liberal democratic and free-market structured State Maori are free to be Billy T and Anika Moa but not Eva Rickard, or Tame Iti . We are given the generous allowance to be a musical-sporting-all-singing-all-dancing people, but not an independent-in-control-of-our-own-political-and-economic-destiny people.

I like this bit. I've always felt that that sums up how a lot of people view Maori in NZ, or how they feel they should behave.

You can build as many boats as you like, you can own a few boats (but not too many), you can steer the boat now and then, but you better not ever rock the boat.

  • Hard News: Wonderful athletes,

I think most sides manage to tie things up in the middle stages quite well for two reasons.

Firstly because sides look to score big runs in the first 15 overs and the last 10 overs. The only reason they don't is if they have lost a lot of wickets and if thats the case they can't score freely in the middle overs anyway.

The other reason is that if they have successfully got 100 off 15 overs for one or two wickets then they don't really need to score all that freely in the middle stages. The field has gone out to the boundarya nd there are singles everywhere.

If you get 100 of the first 15, and aim for 100 off the last ten (which many sides do these days) then that's 200 runs with 25 overs in the middle where just 4 an over will see you to 300 runs. These sides know all this so they are never in much of a rush during the middle.

Like LegBreak says, if you bowl in the middle overs your figures are always going to look reasonable if you are an average bowler and very good if you are a good bowler ie. Vettori.

  • Hard News: Bob each way,

Whoops, "hear, hear". Or is it "there, there"? No that's if I'm consoling them.

    here, here Riddley.

If we simply look at the value of the land and say "rich people live here near the beach on the big north facing sections.... and poor people live here miles from anywhere, facing south on top of your neighbours" then lets see what kind of social costs we pay later.

In a couple of years I'm gonna move into the country, gonna eat a lot of beers.

  • Hard News: Bob each way,

I can name a street just through the bush reserve backing onto our section in Massey which would certainly rival McGhehan Close. It's a nice wee breeding ground for 14 year old burglars. Since we have been here (2 years) our lawn mower was nicked, we have had them case underneath our house for whatever they could find, our neighbours have been robbed three times (the ones on the other side were robbed three times before we moved into the street), and one neighbour has caught and beaten up two sets of youths in the last 12 months who were cutting through our place to see what they could pinch. The primary school over the road also has it's swimming pool fence cut regularly along with the cover for it and of course the standard grafitti and smashed windows after most weekends.

And we actually live in the good part of Massey!

But I've had my campervan broken into literally alongside the walls of the Vatican City, so if it aint safe there where the hell is it safe? I guess god was too busy admiring the sistine chapel ceiling or something to cast them down with lightning bolts.

  • Hard News: The true meaning of Tutaekuri,

I gaze with awe at nature but have no belief whatsoever that any individual or being 'began' it. Feelings of spirituality are just that in my opinion. Feelings. Nothing more than feelings. Well maybe powerful and deep feelings where we attach powerful and deep meaning to things which make us have feelings which are powerful and deep. But we don't need to explain those feelings as meaning there is somebody or something out there. Do we ask ourselves... why do I feel horny?, why do I feel happy? why do I feel a sense of foreboding? why do I feel like a chicken kebab? why do I feel depressed? Some times there are obvious reasons but often not.

I know why I feel depressed today though. My cat died this morning.

  • Hard News: The true meaning of Tutaekuri,

It seems the vast majority of conflict the world sees on a large scale and small scale is sparked by differences not just religion (even religions have a habit of splintering into little divisions which spark conflict). Thankfully I think that we are shown that education and exposure to different ideas, beliefs, skin colours, hobbies or what ever the hell can over come all. And isn't that part of nature as well? Enlightening ourselves and living happily ever after. ;) sniff sniff

  • Hard News: The true meaning of Tutaekuri,

Well according to the bloke on Tommorow's World this morning 100 million US citizens will die from pestilence, 100 million from war and 100 million will essentially become refugees of the world. The bible says so.

Also the US is losing it's grip on global military domination not because it was the most powerful country but because god had given them those victories.

Funny, I thought it was the US tax payer. Guess they'll be wanting their money back since it was god funding it all and their contribution was unnecessary.

  • Summer Holiday,

I'm not going to eat so much turkey this year. Two years running I fell asleep under the dining room table an hour after lunch. From most people that would be a bad look. From me it's half expected. Nonetheless, that stuff should be banned!
