  • Joe Wylie, in reply to JacksonP,

Not sure who the artist is, but liked this collection in the MCA.

The Yellow House poster looks very much like the work of Martin Sharp, as mentioned above by Ian. None of the other works look like his.
At the very beginning of the 70s Sharp's Yellow House in Kings X was an interesting venue.

at a museum in Victoria (Melbourne) she was harangued for writing notes about the artworks

Try taking a pen and sketchpad. That really makes gallery staff worried!

We're so indoctrinated to treating artworks like holy relics. I think a lot more people should write and draw in response.

One of the considerable pleasures I had on my last trip to Scotland was visiting their National Art Gallery (and the museum, but that's another story.) There were courteous little signs up advising art students & other artists, to not block other artlovers' viewing pleasures - staff would assist with easels if wanted...

Easels! Good lord. Do they bring you snacks as well? And clean your brushes? Cos that would be REALLY good. :-D

I remember seeing a sign to that effect (No sketching) in The Chchch Art Gallery, and thinking WTF? Isn't that how all prior artists started, by sketching and absorbing the work of the old masters (and mistresses) - maybe one day there'll be signs saying 'it is illegal to remember this work'!

Um, neither of those services were notified 8>)...but it was a serious gallery, which acknowledged a teaching role...I whipped out my art-Moleskine and made visual notes (I have a weird passion for Raeburn) and nobody blinked or blenched...

On the trains theme - unloved locomotives and rolling stock at the could-be Dorrigo rail museum - at that time a bone of contention between two groups.

Thanks Richard, great shot of an amazing event. I heard a woman that day cry "Look at the flag!", and suddenly there were these aboriginal women bawling their eyes out at the sight of their flag up there atop the bridge.

Mr Leggs was driving 'see if you can get a pic of the sky tower and the vic park chimney' was his suggestion. I did, but they seem to have merged into one.
