Still the wrong season, I know, but these bright little spots of yellow grabbed my attention on the way to work today.

And the sky decided to turn all dramatic this afternoon. This is what greeted me as I stepped out of Teaching Building 1. Not even a tiny breath of wind or drop of drizzle to match the ominous looking clouds, though.

Lovely flowers Hebe, looking forward to more.
Nice little spots of yellow Chris.

Out at Bethells beach yesterday, glorious (Spring) day. There were a pair of shags flying around.
Managed to snap one. Flying Shag.

    Flying Shag.

    Sitting shags.
Three species thereof, black, little black, and little shag (yes I know, such evocatively imaginative names!) This through my kitchen window last week. Pied shags also commonly use the perch provided (this is willow log No. 6) but it's rare enough to see three different species on it together, haven't seen all four. I caught the moment when little black in the middle felt the pressure of being eyeballed - it was gone in seconds.

And flying pigeon - but that incidental. Thursday 9am, I was lined up for a hand-held photo of daytime Venus between the more central branch tips of pre-Spring walnut tree as the crescent moon passed nearby on its orbit, when the pigeon flew through the frame more rapidly. So freezing a moment as ships sailing by in the day.
(Venus will show after enlarging the image with a second click.)

    great accident Chris, works well.

Here are the buds on the forest pansy tree almost ready to open up. Love this small tree, the leaves are almost perfect heart shapes in deep crimson red all year till they go green yellow in autumn.

  • Islander, in reply to ChrisW,

The little island Maukiuekie – off Matuatiki kaik’ bay at Moeraki – is the only known place in ANZ where four species of shags share the same nesting ground. They also
share it with the Royal Australian spoonbill – one of 3 places they are known to nest
in ANZ. (One of the other places this self-introduced species nests in is up the Waitangitaona arm, adjacent to the Okarito lagoon, where it shares the nesting area with little shags – and the kotuku-)

Here's the fourth shag species in occupation of the willow log at the foot of my garden - a pair of canoodling pied shags. It was indeed a previous spring and I think I know what they were thinking, but the riverside domestic architecture obviously not to their taste, this is not a nesting ground, no shaggery here.

Well they've pretty much got Avonside to themselves now, but since they developed a taste for city life they're rowdier than Sydney flying foxes in the fig season. I've seen a squabbling paradise drake land on the roof of a parked car in Avonside Drive. He staggered about in the slipstream from a passing bus before relaunching into the serious business of sorting out his rival. There was a particulary intrepid pair that attempted to stake their claim on Latimer Square before the quakes. Even a pipe band event wasn't enough to deter them - they simply retired to the far side of the square and set up their own rival racket.
