  • John Farrell,

Ghengis Cohen? His parents must be Terry Pratchett fans!

  • Stephen Judd,

This was about 1992. The Colour of Magic came out in the late 80s. So in order for G Cohen to be eligible for enrolment those parents would have had to travel back in time for the birth, which would work better in the Discworld than it does here.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I overheard a woman in Pak N Save telling off her daughter (I presume it was her daughter) "Sativa, you stop poking your brother!".

Oh, she must have been named after Avena sativa, the scientific name for oats.

Also, I have heard from two unrelated sources of a child in Auckland named Mangere Bus Centre [Surname]. I'm hoping that, unlike Brooklyn Beckham, he wasn't named after his place of conception.

  • Stephen Judd,

Weird. I've heard that story too, but the child was called Mt Eden Bus Stop. And place of conception explicitly mentioned as the reason. I would have heard that in about 93, 94.

I heard it was Mt Albert Bus Stop; no clarification as to conception or birth, but because the person was arrested when a policeman that stopped him (god knows why) thought he was taking the piss.
