  • Russell Brown,

Is that the same place that sold you stale wine?

No. That was the Pt Chev Liquor Centre. I don't go there any more.

Super Liquor is the one in the Goldmine Centre, managed by a genial Indian family, and patronised by stoned 19 year-olds who spill out of the pub next door in the evenings.

    You and Hannah Arendt.

Yeah, that's probably where I got it from. I read the Eichemann book years ago, so something sunk in, at least ;-)

Mr Beck is taking his comedy show on the road. Will punters have to check their guns in at the door?

Yet more on mass gun purchasing. I wonder if the people at Fox News and the NRA feel any sense of responsibility for the deaths of those cops last weekend.

I get the feeling that they don't care. "It's only television". I also get the feeling that some of them are trying to get the Government to shut them down, in the interests of public safety, so they can cry out about being suppressed.

on a side note. I'm staggered in these bleak economic times, that the government is still fining retailers for opening, during the christian festival.

  • Russell Brown,

Salon's new columnist The Wingnut, apparently a senior Republican operative, aims to explain conservatives to liberals who read Salon.

He's done Michelle Bachmann this week, but it's a bit lacking.

It's like he can't understand how people would really find her McCarthyist blathering and claims about secret "re-education camps" and world governments all that unusual.

He concludes it's really the liberal media's fault ...

Yeah, but those people love cops. And it's hard to imagine looking at a picture from the memorial service like this one and not reflecting on your own role in these things.

The shooting gets mentioned as a kind of aside in a lot of these discussions, and perhaps the likes of Crazy Glenn Beck think about it at the same level of abstraction. The police of North America don't though. Cops came to the memorial from as far away as Oregon, and even Toronto.

If the nutbars really want to practise what they preach, they might as well form a militia along the lines of Timothy McVeigh, and then the BATF will have an excuse to do a Waco on them.

Not that hard when you are not a reflective person; I doubt these people are psychologically equipped to take responsibility, let alone see cause and effect.

The NRA attitude to anyone that runs an argument about gun control is to argue that guns save lives.

No- one needs an automatic weapon or a high-powered rifle for protection. And if you need one for hunting then you're certainly not a good shot.

Reminds me of just after the Dunblane massacre, when Prince Philip remarked that cricket bats can kill people too so he asked if they would be outlawed as well.

Use a gun in the proper manner, and it will kill its target. Use a cricket bat in the proper manner, and it won't.

Yes, although I'm pretty sure that more English royals have been killed by cricket balls (one) than by gunfire (zero - I think). Philip was just looking after his own there.

Besides, we all know that guns don't kill people. Bullets kill people.

  • Tony Kennedy,

Paul Krugman writes on Tea Parties.

it turns out that the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass roots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects. In particular, a key role is being played by FreedomWorks, an organization run by Richard Armey, the former House majority leader, and supported by the usual group of right-wing billionaires. And the parties are, of course, being promoted heavily by Fox News.

  • Tom Beard,

All this reminds me of growing up in Chch in the 80s, and a couple of weird bookshops: one in the Square with a libertarian bent and ZAP connections, and a fundamentalist Christian one on (I think) Manchester St. Both had their own special subgenres of insane literature (Ayn Rand in the first and creationism in the other), but there was a common thread between the two: the impending one-world socialist government, of which the UN is just the first manifestation.Through combinations of mind-control fantasies, apocalyptic Book of Revelation lunacy ("bar codes are the mark of the beast!") and sub-Dan Brown (and sub-sub-sub-Eco) Masonic/Rosicrucian/Templars conspiracy paranoia they managed to weave together the same two otherwise disparate extremes of wingnuttery. To see this sort of thing on a "proper" news network, rather than in dingy bookshops run by shuffling recluses, is beyond belief.

Oh, and given Beck's fascination with fasces on the Mercury dime, I hope he hasn't seen this list of this very common symbol's appearances in the US. OMG, Lincoln was a secret Fascist! It's knowledge, bro.

  • Rich of Observationz,

It's interesting, though, that the right is much better at civil disobedience than the left:
    - National's tractor protest against farmers paying their way on climate change - succeeded]]

    - The UK blockades of oil refineries - caused substantial disruption and resulted in a freeze in fuel duty costing GBP6bln.

    - The UK pro-foxhunting marches - although foxhunting was banned, it continues with no effective enforcement action.

Also, I wonder how many wingnuts are on the US no-fly list? My guess would be zero, despite their proven tendency to terrorism.
