I watched the movie of the book Illustrated man, of which Craig referred to earlier, on 16mm, at alternative school. That Ectacrome film has richness of colour.
Slightly less encouraging is that Zack Snyder (he of the eye-wateringly dreadful 300) has a re-make of The Illustrated Man pencilled in for his next project after the release of Watchmen -- which I expect to continue the perfect row of duck eggs that are film adaptations of the works of comix god Alan Moore.
I'm not a big fan of Ray Bradbury (in most of his work, the infantile whimsy is toxic) but nobody deserves the Snyder treatment.

A bad tattoo is like having a shitty haircut for the rest of your life.
Ended up with my first one (on arm)being what I considered not bad but badly done. So I went up to College hill and bitched to Phil Mattias. He knew the person who had done this and taught me lesson 1, that it isn't the place you go to but could be a particular artist and before long I was booked in for another at his shop. This one I designed myself. Got the ancestry thing going and took parts of an engraving found inside the pyramids in Mexico which I turned into an armband on the other arm, and lesson 2, armpit area aint much fun, I can tell you that for nothing .( I would post a pic but haven't figured out how to so maybe later.) Then I think the bug set in and its a matter of "what next?" so stomach :) Let me just add here SHIT! Lesson number 3, I was informed that the central nerves area is friggin painful so Emma you may want to try the stomach. Got the Sun around my belly button. Lesson 4 is they don't do gold for a colour so it's reds a la yellow, but I like. I only have 3 on my back and that is basically , see no, speak no, hear no evil, (which I try to adopt as a general practice) and I don't get to see these very much but they are IMHO rather nice. Lesson 5 I got from these is, It took me ages before I realised I had a monkey on my back but took solace that, they were good ones
:) Haven't fixed the bad one yet but I will when I know what is right, but it is a good reminder of a drunket with 2 beautiful
friends. -

Oh and a friend (works in IT) had (as a departing NZ ) a microsoft blue screen of death error message tatooed up his forearm. It ended up somewhere on youtube. Hope you are out there and well Drunken Llama :)
And also Phil Mattias. RIP -

Heh, I gained twenty kilos when I was pregnant. Unless I'm tattooing a ploughed field, on my stomach is right out.
Though I am blown away by this scar tattooing. The lizard over the mastectomy scar is very cool.

That's fantastic. Did you see the documentary Titless Wonders, Emma? That woman reminds me of the women that Gaylene Preston talked to, and filmed. Many, like my mum, chose not to have reconstructive surgery. They viewed their titlessness as sort of a badge, if you will. A tattoo seems to be a really good way of preserving that, and saying what you want to say in a somewhat more obvious way.
-
No tatoo stories, but observing that Sofie's phrase "a good reminder of a drunket with 2 beautiful friends" shows the new word works really well. Bravo!

Yeah, I did, it was lovely. Breast cancer runs rampant in the female line of my family. I lost a cousin to it when I was little, and both my mother and aunt have had lumps removed. The prospect has always scared me more than a little. But these tattoos, they're like taking control back over your own body.
There's a picture somewhere, I can't remember if it's on that site or not, of a woman who's had a reconstruction done, then covered the reconstructed breast in a cherry blossom tattoo. That's my plan now.

I was told about someone who had "1." tattooed on one hand, and then "1. hand" on his foot. Because, right, because it's a foot note.
After being told of this, we then sat around thinking up similarly themed additions, like getting "ibid" on the other foot...

Yes, me too. I spend a reasonable amount of time thinking, as a large breasted woman, what I would do were I ever to get it. Oh, and getting regular mammograms.

For cyclists.....

That should read...

like getting "ibid" on the other foot...
... and "cf" on your penis.

Or "sic". Or "stet".

BSOD This is Drunken Llama just after he got it done. He popped into the local to show us and quickly downed a Galbraiths Bitter and Twisted or was it a Resurrection? :)

Heh. I love "stet". :)

Another way in which macs have more style -- a small grey folder with the question mark of death would look much better!

Roger - love that page, you may notice that my avatar is a clipped piece of the Sturmey Archer sprocket. That page seems to have inspired a couple of other cyclists to get similar tats; see this Sturmey Archer arm piece or this variant on the Rudge.
A plethora of cycling tats available at Squirrels Cycling Tattoo Collection (sic).

Another option for cheapskates and masochists: I have heard the the term "chainring tattoo" used to refer to a particular kind of cycling injury, where little dots of scar tissue are left after your leg impacts the chainwheel teeth. Sometimes embedded grease or oil make a trail of permanent black points for the perfect tattoo effect. Also called the "rookie mark" by the meanspirited.
Anyhow, carry on.

It's more commonly just used to refer to a greasy mark on the inside of your right calf from accidentally brushing your outer chainring. There's usually no injury involved. And yes, it's normally seen as a sign of mild muppetry, though it happens to us all... though I've seen a few inked on permanently as well.

I've got one on the inside of my thigh. I was kneeling down behind my VW beetle adjusting something or other on the engine when it backfired with my leg about 2 inches from the little pea shooter tailpipe. I was wearing shorts, it hurt like the buggery and I've still got carbon embedded in it over 20 years later.

I've not had a chance to follow this discussion too closely, so apologies if this its already covered, but can I ask two questions of anyone inclined to advise?
Firstly, do you know of any good artists in Sydney that you'd trust to do a pohutukawa design?
Secondly, who'd you recommend to do a something like a pohutukawa that's in Welly (as I'm back over for a week and that might be when I finally get the courage I've lacked for several years).

That is why I went for a 1970s Raleigh chainwheel on my right ankle... an 'in' cycling joke, and a hark back to my first 10-speed

My artist (Tim Worrall) was unavailable, so I contacted Gordon Toi Hatfield and arranged an appointment, no waiting list.
I know I'm a bit late for that topic (and please forgive my mistakes in English, I'm not a native speaker). But I'm soon going to New Zealand and I'd like to get a moko. I discovered Gordon Toi Hatfield in a french TV show. Then I tried to google him to know how to contact him but I didn't find his "tattoo parlour" (don't know if I can use that word but...). Could you please give me his website or e-mail adress or at least the town where he works? It would really help me.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Mel Jo,
If you wanna contact Gordon Toi Hatfield then send him an e-mail: manamoko@gmail. He's currently in the Netherlands. To get him to do his art for and with you means you will have to be prepared to wait in line and be patient. So signing up early on is hands down the best tip I can give you. His work is widely regarded as one of the very best out there and I can tell you: well worth the wait.
Wishing you well on your journey.
Kia kaha
