A quiet country road? Or Kiwitia St in Sandringham?

    Nikau, Pt Chev backyard styles.

I like that effect. What's that app?

Camera+ – created by a team that includes Karl von Randow of CactusLab. It’s been a huge success and deserves to be.

There’s a little more to learn than on the built-in Camera app, but it packs a lot into a very intuitive interface, including built-in sharing and a range of settings and effects.

    Edit: Currently 99 cents!

At $300 with a two-year Telecom contract that was better than my old Vodafone one, for sure. (The voice and data performance on XT also seems notably better.)

And the camera itself is amazing. A lot of image-processing goes on inside the phone, it seems.

The Guardian published a head-to-head comparison by one of its photographers, Katherine Rose. In most match-ups, the 4S looked pretty good compared to her pro Canon 5D mkii. In a couple, it actually beat the Canon.

You took that on a phone? Bloody amazing.

Happy New Year to you all. I'm thinking about a friend's do in Heathcote; but today's "event" inclines me to an evening at home. I have a good book too...

Interesting. Via Jackson, some similar smarts that impressed me - the fricking awesome Lytro that allows refocusing and other manipulation by viewers long after the shot is taken. See their gallery for examples.

  • JacksonP, in reply to Sacha,

First heard about the Lytro through Simon G. I really want one. Now!

I'd still back the DSLR over the iPhone for a certain type of shot, or printing large, but the 4s is impressive. Those comparison shots are quite staggering.

    +1

Also, you're likely to have the phone with you all the time. You know how the best camera is the one you have with you!

One for the road not taken, from iPhone on Waiheke.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Happy NY Jackson. It's been a pretty mixed year all round I think, but your photo blog has been a highlight. Thank you.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Happy New Year from across the ditch. We still haven't got to 2012 yet, but it sure feels good to be ushering this year out the door. This was the end of our day here on the Central Coast, waiting for the evening fireworks down on the waterfront.

  • Jackie Clark,

Happy New Year, my lovely PAS friends, met and unmet. 2011 was an unhappy one for many, so I hope that 2012 brings better things for us all.

Thanks! The gravatar is a photo I took at the aquariam in the Pittsburgh Zoo last year (erm, 2010, we're still in 2011 for the next 14 hours.) The turtle was at Akumal Bay, on the Yucatan Peninsula. The turtle photos look like I used retrofilters, but they were disposable underwater cameras loaded with 800 ISO film. When we got them back from being developed they actually smelled like fixing solution. I hadn't smelled that in years.

Happy New Years Day Jackson. My head hurts. A lot :)
Hope everyone survived and enjoyed the events of last night and can look to this year in a better light. Fingers crossed.
As Stella indicates, she has a plan. Sort of. it's around the corner...

Julie, what a beautiful photo of a beautiful evening! I don't reckon fireworks can top that. :-)

Jake: good old disposable cameras, huh! Well they're lovely, very dreamlike.

Jackie: Happy New Year to YOU, dear lady! xxx

And all PAS folk: you're the best, have a fantastic year. Let's hope this one is memorable for good positive reasons.

    Undergrowth iPhone.

Happy New Year from across the ditch.

Cheers Julie, and everyone else. That looks rather blissful. Rain just cleared a bit today, and we made it to the botanical gardens.

Thought I'd do a comparison on the iPhone and the Canon G10. Part II to follow.

Thanks Simon, and also for your contributions thus far. Funnily enough I was discussing the pictures of your dad working on the plane with someone today. She was a retired aircraft engineer from Riverhead, and we were talking about her first Box Brownie camera, and the pictures she'd taken of planes and classic motorcycles in the 50s and 60s. The circumstances didn't quite allow me to suggest she donates her negatives to a good cause, but I was tempted.

    ETA:

And so the red blossom falls from the trees and pools on the ground ...

    Shot, sir.
