Thanks - but I've noticed that the picture looks like a face, with a green willow fringe, the seagulls as eyes and the swan as nose and mouth - and I can't see it any other way now...

So many lovely birds! I voted right at the start of Bird Of The Year and nearly forgot which one I chose, had to look up the email to make sure... I picked the fairy tern as I figured with so few of them left they could do with the publicity.
I've never actually seen a fairy tern as far as I know, so instead here's a kaka from Wellington's Botanic Garden a couple of weeks ago (my best bird shot since this one in the Spring thread).

An oldie, reposted.
Nice little photo story Venetia. Thanks.
Only 8 days to go for the Bird of the Year voting. You know, just in case you haven't already voted for the Kakapo. Or whatever takes your fancy. At the moment it looks like the Karearea/NZ Falcon is going to take it out. Is that our need for speed, or Raybon Kan?
Some great shots in here, and I'll start compiling a short list for the promised prize. On reflection, rather than being prescriptive, I'll even let you choose one of the many prints Sam Clark has on offer in his Birds of New Zealand Collection.

A swallow picture I took a couple of years ago, and turned into a Valentine’s card.
Nice shot. Aren’t swallows’ wings amazingly pointy? Also lovely shot a page or so ago with the waxeye in the jade tree. :-)

Hey, I haven't seen that. Landing or taking off? Wish I had wings.

That'll be Red Bull you're needing then? : )

I miss NZ birds! So it has been lovely to see lots on this post! I now live in the coffee growing area of Colombia so thought I could share one of our backyard visitors - the Baranquillo who has some rather gorgeous tail feathers! We were pretty exciting to see a mountain Toucan last week as well although my partner caused such a racket in his excitement to run for the camera he frightened it off! It's also pretty magic to get hummingbirds zooming in the house and hovering above the computer before they zip off on their way to drink more nectar! Am looking forward to being back in NZ next month though and wandering in the Waitakere's with lots of Tui darting around!

Hola to the Baranquillo and it's very interesting tail! I wish we had hummingbirds here, I had one hover in front of my face in San Francisco this year, and then zip away again. That was magic : )

That's setting the bar pretty high Gareth. What a stunning shot.

Blame the birds, not me. Keas are poseurs (sometimes!).
