They are fast growers if they have water
And they like their water from above . My Mum for many years nurtured one by emptying her (cold) hot-water bottle on it every morning. :-)

Oh yes please. In the past in Christchurch I have found they mostly grow easily as long as they are sheltered from wind. In Wellington we had huge mamaku by the rubbish bins, but they tend to get frosted down here unless you can find a very sheltered spot; even then it's a shade too cold and they are not as lush. Ponga and wheki seem to go okay, silver ferns under tree cover.

Cool, I'll see what pops up. It'll happen just not sure when.

Tried my hand at that video thing.
Me too.. made a little video of stills, even made my own soundtrack - then had to think about setting up a youtube account..... later.

I originally had some guitar noodling over mine, but decided to borrow the soundtrack in the end. Will have to go original next time.
Music Videos even, owl?

That's right - there's the challenge! Tho I feel it's an easy challenge to whip up a better track than my Music Cobble : )

Lake Victoria
Oh very good to see!
Even if a friend of mine refers to it as Victoria Puddle . As lakes go, it's a tiddler. ;-)

It looked pretty substantial when it was being relined a few months back. There were very large dump trucks depositing some kind of clay-like substance. Liquefaction from the Feb 2011 quake turned it into a wetland with a great central mudflat. Around mid-2011 it was a honking paradise for strutting waterfowl as they staked out their territories.

Perhaps more like it used to be?
Victoria Lake was formed in North Hagley Park in 1897 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. It had been a swamp of over 1 acre in area, and was extended to over 4 acres, destroying numbers of native plants since lost to Christchurch.

took a wander through the Botanic Gardens for day 1 of spring and I captured a few colours.
I was there today! But can't upload from here, so will share when I get home tomorrow. Turned quite sunny mid morning.

Last night’s torrential rain, that slowly faded out over the course of this morning, was most welcome after three days of mid-summer style “sauna weather” (as the local press has come to call it) – oppressive heat, humidity, and PM2.5 shooting off the scale (a rather depressing headline of a couple of days ago said it had doubled the limit). And the result of that rain? Tonight’s sunset, first looking north, then looking southwest. This is a beautiful sight.

I hope you got something of the magnolias, they're glorious right now but my photos didn't do them justice.
Walking into town yesterday, I stopped to see the tuis in the kowhai at the Old Government Building and managed to get quite close to this one. All fluffed up because it was singing its little heart out for me.
