Then it nipped over to another branch to duet with a friend (or spar with a rival?). Love the feather cloaks.

    Spring at Fort Takapuna

Nora, do you know what those white flowers are called? I think they're the same as some that grow in the spring wildflower garden at the Botanic Gardens here. We had a lovely dark red one as our desktop picture for a while but I don't know what they are.

Looks like sparaxis that easily self-establishes in Auckland. Perhaps your red one was a bit like this?

    Loving the pics.

Yup they were sparaxis – I’ve always thought of them as Spraxias, and was also confused about whether they were Spraxias or Ixias. I bought seven plants as ‘potted colour’ years ago and now get a purple and white display every year without any effort. It’s just starting up now.

Also – big Tui envy there!!! Amazed at how you all get so close and get such beautiful bird pictures!

Also, beautiful sunsets Chris Waugh – they look great in the pictures and must’ve looked even more amazing ‘in person’.

Oh and while there is still space …

That purple is gorgeous, I find it hard to get the velvety look of the petals in photos but that one shows it nicely.

It's taken me years and many many bad photos of tui to get to these ones. The purchase of a point & shoot camera with an 18x optical zoom helped, I don't have to get quite so close now...

    and rocket flowers

Hi Jos, did you know you can eat the flowers as well as the leaves? They have a nutty flavour - rather good!

I cut my row of rocket back a couple of days ago - it had provided us with greens all winter long and was 'getting away' - tall and flowery.

From the huge mountain of cut off plant I harvested a kilo and a half of leaves, which I steamed lightly, put into portion sizes on a large flat trays, slid the trays inside large snap-lock bags in the freezer, and hey presto, we have rocket for dinner whenever we feel like it. Rocket is a fabulous green veg. I can't think why other people don't cook with it as it is delicious! When I was feeling tired and hungry a day or so ago I popped one of these pre-steamed portions into the pot with some baked beans - yum! The beans have never tasted so good! I'm always thinking about how to live better on less, and count the use of rocket as a particularly valuable and delicious discovery.

I just love all these photos – glorious - thank you, everyone!

Vegies can be beautiful too. Yes, the carrots are back in the limelight – two of my excellent plants have finally leapt skywards and burst into flower. A few others still remain for eating – still tasty and tender, but I’m guessing not for much longer…
