  • David Hood,

Just as a FYI for people, as the set of people who post pictures on the Internet has a strong crossover with the set of people who use Instagram, I thought people should at least be aware of the rather dramatic new Terms and Conditions of Instagram. Basically, you agree Instagram can use you likeness and photos commercially as they see fit without paying you.

    Silver Falls Fern

That's special! Is that the tops or bottoms of the leaves?

    Auckland • Since Dec 2011 • 2700 posts Report

  • David Hood,

The tops of the leaves, younger leaves seem to generally be more greenish, older ones more reddish. It is about shin high, so this was shot by basically pointing the camera down at the fern(s).

  • Hebe,

Christmas hasn't really come to PAS so I'll post this in Capture because this is beautiful and sad, like some of the photos.

"This recording of the carol ‘Silent Night’, is sung in English and Māori by a group of Māori Battalion patients from No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital in North Africa, 1942.

The Māori is sung by Nurse Wiki Katene of Porirua (Ngāti Toa)."

  • Jos,

We have those in the garden in Whakatane David, lovely, we refer to them as Japanese ferns, no idea why, just sounds appropriate

    Japanese ferns

Well the botanical name is Athyrium nipponicum and Japanese painted fern is an alternative name.

The Māori is sung by Nurse Wiki Katene of Porirua (Ngāti Toa).”

    I saw that come up on the Māori Battalion Facebook page, along with the Christmas messages. Quite astonishing, and incredibly moving. Which lead me back to the 28th Maori Battalion website, and this story about Christmas 1943;

As promised Sir Apirana Ngata had achieved the impossible. In the very Christmas week 1943, out of the blue so to speak, two trucks arrived and unloaded rusty battered old cream cans still showing Ngati Porou, Whanau a Apanui and Tuhoe dairy factory supply numbers, and the familiar brass plate of the makers Alex Harvey & Sons. There were delicacies well covered in pork fat; tuna, paka tahu, mutton bird, karengo, kahawai, pipi; and so on and on. Te Rau Aroha [the canteen truck] became the assembly and dispatch point to get these gifts up to the front line and for Christmas dinner at B Ech.

This was written by my Grandfather, who drove the Canteen truck in the Italian Campaign. He was wounded shortly after this, but made it home, and was with us for all the Christmases after, until 2006.

    If you’ll forgive the reminiscences.

Thanks, Hebe, that's beautiful. And I think I'll play that to my students. Should be covered by fair use, right? It is time for my 1st years to get their Christmas lesson.

Jackson, great story, reminiscences welcomed rather than forgiven.
