I would endorse that. He seems to be running everything as it is.

Glorious to see, I do love the feel good stuff around the place & I love the Bulls.
However I also see alot of valuble metal all alone with clear access in a lightly travelled street in a city full of scrapmetal trucks.
ANZ dome just disappeared like that.

There is more attention on belongings these days as there would have been earlier on. At night a security guard sits in a car just behind the bulls and watches the prized exhibits. As far as metal goes there is a sentry hut on the corner of Lichfield and Madras. The streets are still cordoned off . The west side of Lichfield Street only open for Red Zone permits..

Waiting for the fog to lift.

By the way. Got to Christchurch Airport around 10 .30 this morning and left around 12. 40 . The doggone parking machine asked for 15 dollars to allow exit. What a ripoff.
Thank you ChristchurchCity Airport Authority whoever they are.

I'm not paying enough attention. Great photos Gudrun. That piano is utterly incredible.

    Love the letterboxes too.

It probably would have been the kind of piano that Split Enz's Eddie Rayner would have played on, if it had been created back then.

  • Joe Wylie,

A pair of Steinways by indigenous Canadian artists.

There are a few mentions of an "art case" Steinway by the Australian indigenous artist Judy Watson, but pictures seem elusive.

Steinway's original art case piano, with links to others. A great pity that Liberace didn't live to try the Swarovski special.

Seeing we had a 4.9 the other day i drove past the bulls and checked and both are safe and sound. The Steinway is inside anyway and i am sure in good shape.

  • Hebe, in reply to Gudrun Gisela,

I drove past the bulls mid-afternoon yesterday and was startled by the many people wandering around the otherwise vacant site, peering, inspecting, talking and just being there in the sun. A cheering and unexpected sight right by the red zone fences.
After that I was going to drive west along Gloucester St from Latimer Square on the way the to St Albans, for no reason other than just because I could. But I couldn't: there was a freaking traffic jam from Manchester St down. An inexpressibly weird moment. The city is alive again; sometimes, sort of.

I snapped this quickly when I went to Alice’s yesterday. Pic 1: Looking from by the Alice’s building on the corner of High and Tuam across High St to the Cotter’s building. The empty spaces are Poplar Lane. The person is projecting a design onto Alice’s old front door that will become C4 Espresso. Pic 2: I think the brick wall on the left of Cotter’s is the side of Goodbye Blue Monday or the Russian vodka bar.
I do see these scenes as hopeful rather than documenting the destruction. The big sky, the possibilities excite me, while the "what was there" thoughts are an inevitable part of the "lingering grief"( Rebecca Macfie's words in the Listener nail the feeling). It's taking time to come to terms with it all.

  • Gudrun Gisela, in reply to Hebe,

It is no doubt stressful driving past the mayhem still raging behind High Street. I think it is that part that gets to me most. Like a slum dwelling village in Calcutta.
Anyway there are de-tours now and i can get back via Madras and that in a way is a lot more pleasant.
