  • Chris Waugh, in reply to David Hood,

Gotcha, thanks. I think I'll play with this raw setting a lot more.

So different from those way-gone days. We need more walk-shorts and long socks in Vulcan Lane. Volunteers?

Thanks for the helpful tips. i’ve been looking at some of my images as black an’ white and got a bit lost. Because they mostly were colour photos of black and white images. But here are some anyhows.

These are not changed but kinda look like they are . They are probably more 3 or 4 tone tho. Then again there's always the black/white sheep.

On the side of the road on the way back from kindy this morning, I was struck by how the light (clear skies! yay!) struck this flower, but just couldn't quite capture it.

I’m a bit late to the party as usual – some really great shots here (love the toilet bowl) and it’s reminded me how much I loved shooting on black and white film yet now I hardly ever convert my colour digital photos to black and white.
So here’s a couple of old photos of my grandparents, shot on film about 15 years ago and a conversion I just did (though jpg) of the back of the St James.

Cool Carol. Thanks for joining in.

And Chris, I like how we get a mirror image in your photos. Our spring turning into your autumn.

I like how the weather is cooling off and the autumn winds are clearing the air out somewhat. I'm trying to save some autumn photos for the next autumn thread too, so that I can be both 6th months out of date and all opposite at the same time.

Lovely sweep of wall and dappled light on the steps, almost reflecting the clouds. So much more striking in black and white.

  • Chris Waugh,

So here's a problem I have with raw: my camera saves raw images in a .NEF format. Of the programmes I have, only Picasa can open them. I can use Picasa to save them as .jpg, but I've been wondering if in the process I lose any of that raw detail. Well, I just compared a photo in the original raw .NEF format and it's .jpg conversion. The .NEF file is 10.3MB and looks just a little bit richer than the 3.9MB .jpg conversion. JPEG is the only option under 'Save as' in Picasa. I can't find any way to persuade GIMP or Irfan View to accept .NEF files. I'm going to do a bit of googling (as much as 2-year old demands to go to a park allow), but does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can keep that raw richness?

ETA: Also browsed through the camera settings, and .NEF is my only raw option that I can see.

ETA#2: Well, look what I found. I hope it works...

EA#3: This too, but it looks a lot less official, so I dunno...

  • Chris Waugh,

And a GIMP plugin for raw. Ugly page, though.

ETA: having installed it - plugin? Really? Or stand alone software? Dunno. Will experiment.

  • David Hood,

If the .nef to GIMP process is like other raw forms, then it may (effectively) be doing a jpg conversion as it imports, so you want if possible to make as many of the tone adjustments as you can as part of the import process (when you have all the data), then you are just tweaking a bit in GIMP.
That said, I'll make another plug for Lightzone, as I understand the open source raw processing it uses supports nef
