That alley (frame 2) got gated off and painted over in grey in order to create a more suburbanite-friendly city for some rugby competition last year. Sad really.

We used to live in the second house down from the old monastery, on Hawker Street. It was beginning to slip downhill towards the harbour but obviously hasn't got there yet.
Brilliant, Geoff. Seems everyone has a Wellington story. My first flat in Wellington was on Percival Street, off The Terrace. Being the last into the flat, I got the room at the back, under the stairs, a metre away from the constantly seeping, moss-covered wall. Ah the (cough) wonderful (bronchial) memories...

Wellington is wonderful, especially on a lovely day. I went down last November for the Opening Night of Show Me Shorts and it was a fantastic weekend. This year I am taking my partner and kids down for that so I hope the weather holds!

I lived for years in (ahem) Grass Street: 10 to 15 mins walk going up from the bay; 3 minutes going down to the bay. It was steep; and beautiful.

I lived on The Terrace in a road-noisy flat while training as a tv producer-director...it nearly killed me - but produced a couple of good/nasty short stories...
Get up at GAHK! to walk to the station to get the train to Avalon -live in that weird
just-opened place for the next 10 hours/learn fascinating stuff/meet fascinating people & turds who looked like humans/eat FOUL food/come back to flat/crash into uneasy sleep.I dont remember Wellington with any pleasure at all-EXCEPT for the people...death has taken a lot of my friends but they still illuminate my life (and my mother still has a picture on her livingroom wall of self & Spiral collective taken - much later, in Wellington...)

We lived there until 1992 and it was a less interesting city than it is now--except perhaps for the large woman who used to shed her clothes and walk around Prince of Wales Park which our house bordered. Also the tinny house/brothel next door.
I like visiting as it is now quite an exotic city but on a cold, windy day when rubbish tumbles along the streets, I recall why we left. -

Since moving back to Welly – 10 years now – I’ve lived in Karori, Mornington, Mt Vic, and currently Kelburn.
In the meantime, I’ve been testing out my smartphone’s 5MP camera. Quite convenient for spurs of the moment, but still no substitute for a proper DSLR.
And now for a very Wellington news story…

All these photos are wonderful, it's ten years and two days since I left Wellington, I thought for a couple of years only. I still miss the place. There used to be a handful of Kowhai trees near Aro Community Centre that I looked forward to blossoming around this time and Hilary's photo of the Pohutukawas is a treat (incidentally, the small Tahitian variety are very common in Sydney, currently there's hundreds planted in Hyde Park, I will try and get a picture).
