  • Gareth Ward,

Hey that's a swanky google spreadsheet ya got there!
Cheers for the Ronson/Alley version of Womanizer, very nice. And can I recommend the Chew Fu version of Love Lockdown. Tis also nice in a way that actually makes the bloody vocoder sound appropriate...

Sneaks unbeknownest into you compound at night, collaborates your spreadsheet and leaves? That's one pointlessly excellent ninja...

  • Paul Litterick,

You're a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n' roll, Mr Brown.

    I approve.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, I meant to put this in the post. Likke Li and Bon Iver busking 'Dance Dance Dance' in a park in LA:

    That's so cool.

  • andrew r,

wow that Likke Li - Bon Ivor busk is really cool ... the Beirut gig late summer this year at the KA or (kingys) as the kids call it, sort of had a similar feel . A little over sold, but pretty cool all the same, a really folky quite fragile performance - one of my fav gigs of the year .Any other favourite 2008 gigs ?

  • Geoff Lealand,

I have done my duty and voted for Word of the Year--but what happened to "going forward"?

Russell--can you slip Portishead 3 into your list?

Any other favourite 2008 gigs ?

Phoenix Foundation at Frank Kitts Park in Feb. Fantastic gig.

  • Evan Yates,

but what happened to "going forward"?

Pedantically speaking, isn't that a phrase? Along with "Nanny State", "Yes We Can", "Hockey Mom" etc..

Should they get the dash treatment to make them hyphenated words?
    "Nanny-state", "Hockey-mom"?

I went to a conference in 2007 and heard a speaker use "Going Forward" 27 times (I still have the tally mark sheet if you want proof) in a 15 minute presentation.
I'd disqualify it on temporal grounds...

  • Russell Brown,

There's a good interview with Big Day Out promoter Ken West on Stuff.

    I liked this bit:

American punk band Good Charlotte recently complained publicly about being repeatedly left out of the tour.

West has a simple explanation for it: "That's because they're shit. They're at the bottom end of the table, they're purely entertainment."

They're part of a string of bands he calls "American bullshit punk", coming thick and fast out of that country.

was really disappointed that PA mainstay 'conflate' wasn't on the list.

There was a term in the 90s, "punk cabaret". Examples: Green Day, The Presidents of the United States.
I remember driving by the Sydney Showground one night and noticing more SUVs than I'd ever seen in my life. Every one had a parent behind the wheel, waiting to pick the kids up from the Presidents' Hordern Pavilion show.

  • Kebabette,

Good call James, incidentally Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer's solo album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" was one of my year's best ofs (love her web site too

And I am with you on Hype machine Russell, it is my go to of the year.

My musical shoutouts (admittedly with a bit of an 80s electro-influence focus and hell it's been a great year for that): Friendly Fires, Boy Crisis, Emmy the Great, TV on the Radio, Passion Pit, La Roux, Little Boots, Santogold, Neon Neon, Candy Coated Killahz, Black Affair, Ladyhawke, Girl Talk, Death Cab for Cutie, Guillemots, Richard Hawley, Dethklok (the best music from a cartoon band ever, it sh*ts all over Metallica) ...

  • Malcolm Ibell,

Can I add Teddy Thompson's A Piece Of What You Need to the list?

It's my album of 2008 - full of wry, sometimes self deprecating, thoughtful songwriting. The title track alone is worth the price of admission - with lyrics like:

    ... Drop dead gorgeous teen
    Singing pages from her diary
So bad, you'd kick her out of bed ...

Then later on, a fantastic OTT camp horn line, courtesy of Marius de Vries.

    Just. Brilliant.

There's a hidden track on the CD too, a great Everly Bros' cover which doesn't seem to be available via any download services - it's one of those 12 minutes of silence after the last track, give you a helluva fright when it suddenly appears kinda hidden.

Oh, and the website has streaming audio for every track - well, except the hidden one (flash dependent though - sorry all you flash haters).
