  • Hebe, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Eloquently, if not elegantly, put Craig. But pleeease make me laugh again today. I did try to order 400,000 "harden the fuck up" wristbands from the Ronnie Johns website after Feb 22.

Maybe the sign near us in St Martins is more apposite: " Stay calm and Carry on" poster sprayed on a fence, then crossed out just before Feb22 and altered to "Now Panic and Freak Out".

  • Ross Mason,

It appears that the engineers might have been right in not allowing the CBD to open after the Feb quake.

It don't look good for the insurance / EQC either with the article about "when-am-I-covered-after- a-quake-but-you-have-not-paid-out." Don't cha just love the "small print".

I hope that when the Govt gets around to buying up all the tracts of land where owners decided to shift out and make the best of it somewhere else, that the "redistribution" of the property to the next wave of developers and landlords is done in a fair and equitable manner that is clear and open and uninfluenced by donations to political parties.

Edite: Heh. And from Lucy's Onion link above:

"What we're seeing here is the same old scientific mumbo jumbo and partisan rhetoric that the Earth has been spewing out for millennia," Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) said. "We're not going to be bullied by a celestial body that has time and again failed to deliver on its promise to glorify and reward mankind with its bounty."

  • Gareth Ward,

If there's one thing people in Christchurch don't need to hear, it's anyone else's musings about how perhaps it would be best to just give up and clear out.
Absolutely, nothing worse than "outsiders" making those comments about someone's home and city. But I would be interested in hearing the views of ChChers on what the predicted geological future of that region is (do we know if it's changed? Can we?) and any necessary changes in how people will live/work/build there.

And from outside, it strikes me that >50% (not sure what that percentage is) of the wider city is still standing/operating as it always was, yes? The idea that you should not only not rebuild but presumedly bowl the majority that is "fine" seems more than a little absurd.

  • Martin Lindberg,

You should have listened to Ken Ring when he predicted yesterday's events!

    Wait-what? He didn't?

Stuff has a "what are you going to do?" poll up today.

    Quite heartbreaking, that poll.

Since people are posting stuff like this:

Knowing you care means a lot.

And talking about social death and stuff, this misanthrope will break the habit of a lifetime and chip in with his best wishes and thoughts, for what it's worth.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

On the other thread we were making analogies about the state of our city. I'm seeing it as a beloved child with a severe behaviour disorder. It's hard to live with right now but with time and therapy the outcome is likely to be good and abandoning it would make everything worse.

One thing I keep reminding myself is that New Zealand got its cool landscape by being seismically and and volcanically active so if I'm a fan of the Southern Alps, or Banks Penninsula then I have to live with the chance of wobbles

    “You should just”

The perverse part of me want's to come up with a phrase that starts "you should just ..." but ends up saying you have all my sympathy.

I can't really appreciate what the stress must be like for you all and I know it's different for each and everyone. I really really just want it to get better for you all.

Also there is a part of me that really wants to feel an earthquake and that part of me is jealous. And I know that all of the folks in CHCH will tell me there is nothing fun about feeling all those earthquakes, but that's the nature of curiosity I guess.

Can I just take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of Auckland with respect to the Auckland idiots queueing up to declare what's "realistic" in today's "Have you given up on Christchurch?" on the Herald website? Grrrr.

Am I that predictable? Yes, yes I am. Also, if anyone has seen the key lately?

Why are people still living in Christchurch" needs to turn it round and think about what they'd do in the same situation. You have friends, family, a job, kids in school - you can't just uproot all of that and just go somewhere else.....

I'd be heartbroken if I had to leave Berhampore, let alone Wellington.

If you want your handcuff key back, you're going to have to solve a series of puzzles, each more fiendish than the last.

It's telling that even Kiwiblog commentators have only sympathy to give. Granny, you need to lift your game.

The terrifying thing about this scenario is its plausibility.

The famous trick for remembering where lost things are is to try to remember the last time you used it, in graphic detail, bringing to mind every tiny aspect. Standing in the place and walking through steps helps. Mostly this fails because remembering the last time it was used is the whole problem. But in this case, it could work, unless, of course, you're using those cuffs all the time...but even if it doesn't work, I imagine it's going to be a lot more fun than trying to remember where you put the baby wipes.

Around here we were wondering what happens to the balloon-dinosaur when it bumps into the giant, invisible, Spiny Norman.
