  • Ian Dalziel,

    shouty John
Just going outside to scream at the universe in the break in the Leaders Debacle

Key is such an odious little man
    his hectoring, smarmy repetitions
constant dragging to lowest common denominator, sports references, cheap jokes,
    muttering, handwaving and eyerolling
    classic bully
    weak
    sad
    .

Apparently JK is going to insert CERA into his Office. I hope he now understands the difference between himself and his Office.

I hope he’s not thinking he can use the magical super-legal powers of the ‘minister for the Canterbury recovery’ to step outside reality and launch the masterplan to morph Chch into Planet Key … :)

No, because we have our own super-hero "Geddis, Man of Law" who will foil his dastardly plot!

Thinking? Nah, planning. Remember, there are no toilets on planet Key so no need for poor people to clean them, trouble is, if you can't poo you just end up full of shit but that is de rigueur on planet Key.

  • Paul Williams, in reply to Moz,

I suspect being white and male also helped you. Even in Marrickville and Newtown my partner cops frequent abuse for being female or asian.

    Undoubtedly yes.

I'm surprised, and saddened, to hear your partner cops flak in Marrickville and Newtown of any variety. Both suburbs are diverse, despite gentrification, and tolerant. Newtown particularly so... I've not seen/heard a lot of racist or sexist stuff in Newtown that's not gone strongly challenged by the locals.

The contest to be the most odious arsehole in Australia is vigorous and has many participants.

    Yup. Sad that.

Even amongst our group of friends. I couldn’t believe the total disrespect for Aboriginals. I couldn’t live with it in the end.

Sophie, agreed. Race relations in Australia is distressing.

There’s John Ansell, who despite being associated forever with Brash’s 2005 debacle is almost inevitably tagged as an “advertising guru”.

Still? I can't track it closely but hasn't he disappeared into a puff of conspiracy of late... didn't the Rotary, even, decide he was best avoided?

And it goes right through to the little things, like they still sell Coon cheese “proudly Australian”.

Coon is the name of the founder, it's not a racist term, at least in so far as it relates to the cheese

I'd only just featured him as a denizen of the political trash heap when he popped up like Candyman.

  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Ah Craig, blue to the core….

What I am is a citizen of a country that holds free, fair and credible elections even when the outcome isn't to my liking. Sorry to disappoint you, Steve, but no matter what Don Brash thought at the time the 2005 election wasn't "stolen". That was a disgusting display of sour grapes and it was unacceptable from anyone, let alone the leader of the Opposition. In three weeks I really hope we're going to be spared an encore no matter who wins, because I don't have much time for anyone who thinks elections only count when they like the result.

“Frankly, you know, one of the reasons I am so utterly determined to work every hour of the day and night I have got until the election is to make sure he’s not the prime minister."”
    Collins on David Cunliffe

Respect Craig but you are a champion for these people and reading Collins’ remarks makes me believe you are not on that “Team”

  • Dennis GRAHAM,

Wake up NZ , under MMP you can't get rid of Judith Collins so long as NATIONAL retains her as # 6 on their party list ,she will be back in parliament even if her electorate dismisses her or National loses the election ,, her resignation / sacking was a diversion

To disambiguate: though Craig has in the past gone to some extremes in supporting National's actions, he is on record as having voted Green last time.
And what could be cleaner than that?

Yep, she's down in the unranked, behind Jamie Lee Ross but ahead of Shane Adern, but she is still high on the list. I'm not sure the Nats can change that, this close to an election. Paging Mr Edgeler!

I'm careful what I say on this matter, particularly careful to not draw comparisons with NZ (I'm not deluded into thinking NZ race relations are rosy btw). What's frankly unfathomable to me is that Australia seems to oscillate between a few significant of high points, Mabo, Keating's Redfern speech and Rudd's apology, and extended periods of indifference or punitive interventions. I don't understand this electorate at all.

Respect Craig but you are a champion for these people and reading Collins’ remarks makes me believe you are not on that “Team”

FWIW, I appreciate, Craig, that you are no different from most others who, from time to time, find the actions of their 'party' frankly ridiculous.

And, what's the deal with asking him to divulge his personal voting record? Isn't he otherwise accountable here for what he says here (or do we all have to declare our allegiences before we offer views)?

The "rape" in rapeseed comes from the Latin for turnip, rāpa or rāpum, but somehow they still decided to change it to "canola". There are a whole lot of other products that have done the same thing as times and language has changed (nigger brown shoe polish, for example). Deciding to be the one defiant exception to that rule is explicitly political and racist.
