  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Oh, I am sorry, Kyle. Our baby girl is not well either, at the mo. She's just been diagnosed with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and Cushings Disease. Nothing some insulin and pills for the rest of her life (she's 10) won't fix. I hope the same can be said for your lovely fellow.

  • Megan Wegan, in reply to Hilary Stace,

At the top, in the middle (I guess) column, it should have a little box with your name and a link to "edit your profile". You can add them in there. :)

  • Hilary Stace,

Would it be possible to put the links to older and newer pages at the top of the page too, please?I can't be the only one to go backwards through threads. I still use a keyboard and would be easier on my OOS.

    Thanks, that was easy.

  • JackElder,

Definitely would like both the "newer/older" links at the top, and preferably an option to skip to an arbitrary page. As Kracklite noted, if the last time you checked a thread it had twelve pages, and now it's got 15, it's easier to just click a link "12" rather than click "older" three times.

  • 81stcolumn,

I am definitely enjoying hte site much more this morning having gotten over the shock. I still don't get what is so important about Typekit.

  • Jason Kemp, in reply to Deborah,

Lets see how the nested comments look? - ok down the page - not nested - but can't have everything.

Having comments with posts is still a good move forward.

  • 3410,

    Do not like.

Sorry. No offence; I appreciate all the work and all, but... I gotta keep it real.

    Me sad. :(

    Anyhow...

  • Don Christie,

Good good good. One comment, your graphics folks (like ours) love these washed out font colours. My eyes are dimmer than theirs...

Another, just test the site on a fairly old phone. Much easier to read the articles and comments. Don't know if that was deliberate but it works. Congrats (again) Cactuslabs

  • Petra,

    The good:

Loads nice and fast. Big font is great on aging eyes. Scrolls nice and smoove. Commenters replies look much better, much cleaner.

    The not-so-good:

Appears to be a bit buggy in Google Chrome. Font doesn't quite render properly. Looks terrible - and quite unreadable - at default viewing settings (Ctrl 0 ). Enlarging the viewing platform using Ctrl + a couple of times fixes this and makes it readable.

Helluva lotta white space on right hand side. Is it necessary to have the two right hand columns be two columns? One longer column would allow the main topics and discussions stretch across more of the screen, instead of being squished into just the left half.

    Wishlist:

To be able to select a specific discussion page to jump to, and to have that at feature at the top of the discussion page as well as the bottom, maybe?

I'm being a bit nitpicky, aren't I? ...But you did ask!

Here, have a Friday morning song:

  • Don Christie,

Oh yeah. As you will not from 3410 above there will always be naysayers. Listen to constructive comments.

The rubbish most sites have to put up with when they change is stunning, but all the upgrades I have seen have lead to *huge* increases in readership after the initial hiatus. I expect to see the same here.

  • Petra,

And just made a minor typo in above post - can't quite see how to edit it?

  • 3410,

"As you will not[ice?] from 3410 above there will always be naysayers".

True, but what does that prove?

    I'm just being honest.

  • Craig Ranapia,

To be entirely self-interested, nice to see that the Public Address Radio podcasts are a little easier to find. Though not enough for my rapacious and needy ego…

  • giovanni tiso,

Surely 3410’s sadness can be explain at least partly by the fact that the (brilliant) joke behind his gravatar will be somewhat lost?

PS More kittehs and I'm out of here.

  • Lyndon Hood,

Nice. Will check it on other machines at some point.

Your quick & easy profile edit made me realise you had the wrong email. Good work there.

And yeah, I found the words a bit smeary on win/ffx. Typekit off. Is it still on in this box?

I am now mentally comparing the time it would take to do this with the time since the BoingBoing redesign...

  • Petra,

A couple more things as I play around.

    Very cool:

Clicked on a reply that was made to Ben Gracewood - that took me straight to the post that was being replied to. Nice.

The post that was being replied to told of disabling Typekit, which I did, and that has improved the readability a bit for me - most especially at default viewing settings (Ctrl 0), even though my biggish screen still demands magnified viewing with at least Ctrl + (x 3).

    Hope I'm making sense. :)

  • HORansome, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Can I just say, as someone who also teaches, that Comic Sans should be a regarded as a big no-no in any pedagogical material.

Comic Sans is incredibly difficult to read if you have, say, dyslexia or some other reading difficultly, due to the fact that certain characters look overly similar to one another. People without dyslexia don't tend to notice, but people with dyslexia would much prefer a nice and distinct Roman font whenever possible.

It's looking good from Canberra, on a mac. I'll see what my work PC with Vista is like when I get there (I should leave actually... all these comments are making me late).

  • Simon Bennett,

Probably nothing to do with the upgrade, but iTunes won't let me subscribe to Public Address Radio podcasts. Can't find the server, apparrently, though it will let me download individual files!
