  • Alan Perrott,

yep looks like a lot of time will get swallowed there. might have to have a word with Simon about a yarn on the Sth Auckland punk/ post-punk scene. was an interesting and pretty much undocumented scene.
    congrats to all involved.

  • Simon Grigg,

Thanks Russell - and from those Cammick archives came a great image of the author of The Exponents story with Jordan, which I'm guessing is late 1980s?

Heh. I was looking at that this morning and I couldn't exactly work it out. Definitely not late 80s -- we were all in London at that point.

I'd say maybe 1984. And winter, by the way I'm rugged up.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

AudioCulture is brilliant. I'm extremely happy that it exists. Well done to all involved!

Speaking of the Exponents, while watching the X Factor on Sunday night, I was alarmed to discover that there was no Wikipedia page for "Why Does Love Do This To Me". Outrageous! I have remedied this.

  • Chip Matthews,

Adding my congrats as well. What an amazing site, I do really believe it to be a taonga.

Sometimes when you're looking for gigs or worrying about the day to day stuff, you get caught up in your own musical journey. Audio Culture tho, man, I feel more connected to our musical history through this site. It's so good to be able to stand back and just look, and absorb, the stories.

Looking at the site this morning, and seeing Dave McArtney, ka mau te wehi.

    Cher!

That's an amazing site, Simon - so rich, and storied. I look forward to spending time delving, and I apologise, once again, for my brother's complete ignorance in this matter. Oh well, his (their) loss.

  • George Darroch,

What everyone else said. She's a beauty. Thanks to Simon particularly - I hope you can get back to living a somewhat more normal life now! I hope there's plenty of room and enthusiasm for the site to grow, and (in a curated and supported fashion) for those with more music, art, stories, and ephemera to contribute. It isn't Wikipedia, but it isn't the National Archive either.

[ETA: I hope there's some thought to pulling in some of the history of music in South Auckland, which is under-storied and under-documented. It's large, important, and it's who we are.]

On a completely different subject, this is probably the most interesting and amusing review of the year's best disco record (see below). I'm loving it.

Bloody brilliant! In the cause of transparency: along with Russell, I am a member of the Digital Media Trust. But this site has exceeded my expectations...

Don't worry George, we have a large Dawn Raid story coming from Phil Bell, Peter McLennan's Phil Fuemana story is on hand and will go up in a few days and there is a lot more, including the deep south (as in South AKL) country scene, on the way.

I'm also intrigued by Alan's post-punk South Auckland mention above. We are talking.

  • "chris",

Great design and info, I'm looking forward to the site hitting its straps, this opening feels a bit premature as is. Some suggestions: Goldenhorse, The Datsuns, James Milne, The Mint Chicks. and for anyone in need of a Nielson fix right this minute Devils should satisfy:

  • Mike O'Connell,

One could get lost for many an hour on a rainy day or indeed a sunny day. Great to see Bill Direen and the Gordons there already. Plenty of old photos I've never seen too.Looking forward to seeing pages on e.g. Phoenix Foundation, Darcy Clay, and the Victor Dimisch Band. Well done to everyone involved - what a fabulous site and resource,

You can turn off the stalking in Spotify preferences. You'd be mad not to.

The funny thing is, it's been easier to get people to write about cult acts than it has been about some of the big pop bands.

  • DexterX,

Most excellent - A fair share of eargasims and fond reminiscence to be found - for sure.

One that springs to mind was a barman at the "Westward Ho" organising a petition; signatures in support of commercial/rock radio playing NZ Music – he delivered it to Hauraki and ZM – he specifically wanted to hear on air the Dance Exponents' “Victoria”.

The “Westward Ho” being the first place I heard “Victoria” as a result of the petition/barman. The barman was more than a fan of NZ Music. A NZ Music enthusist and passionate advocate.

Which makes me wonder, band bios aren't exactly Pulitzer territory. So why not hasten the process and simply solicit and edit submissions from the general public or would that be taking money out of someone's pocket?

And The Herald has noticed, too.

How apt to have caught Cassandra's ears (and eyes)...
...especially now that Jan Hellriegel is making a comeback, too!
    :- )
