  • George Darroch,

Pleased to see that our current songwriters are getting their due. UMO keep getting better... how good is this?

  • Grant McDougall,

She's So Rad aren't bad, but that song and the one of there's just played on RNZ Nat suffer a lot from having that really shitty '80s Phil-Collins-type drum sound.
I realize they probably weren't even alive then, but all the same it just grates like hell.

which has the additional virtue of having provoked Mike Hosking in an Alan Partridge moment

Could you elaborate or, if there's one, post a link, please ?

For historical context, a look at what Apra members did actually rate in that era:

The Tally Ho Story from David is wonderful – would love to see more stories like this from musical heroes. Highlights just how rock n roll many of our musicians are or at least were – the APRA nominations show just how bloody great they are!

While Hosking is a bellend, we live in a country where his radio show plays SJD – that alone is a wonderful thing, shame about the host

Discovered this today from a techno dude I quite like coupled with some locals done and doing good things, not sure if I like it but repeat listens will clear that up

Rounded off with the Herbert Essential mix its been a pretty mint music week

Heads to the Wilco fans – they’ve just dropped a free DL new album

Ah yes. I'd have included it, but I haven't had time since yesterday to even go get it and have a listen so I can say something about it. Next week.

  • TracyMac,

Wow, '81 was a pretty good year. Loved all those choons.

Are there many protest songs doing the rounds at present? Seems to be a dying art (at least the poppy ones that get radio play) and it's not as if there isn't plenty to protest about.

(I ask out of my relative detachedness from the NZ music scene these days, not as an old crustie moaning about indifferent yoof.)

  • bob daktari, in reply to TracyMac,

I semi regularly search for such things and have for a number of years and the results of that is I believe there is a distinct lack of protest/angry songs about the state of the world full stop, given a) the state of things and b) how easy it is to create and share these days

I don't for a second think young people are indifferent - the ones I meet are switched on and really concerned about the same things as us older types

  • Barnaby Nicholls,

Tame Impala Tame Impala Tame Impala. Sorry, couldn't contain my excitement for a moment there. New album out today and by all accounts it's a goodie - apparently people weren't buzzed about the lead single/album track Let It Happen, but I have no idea why. Beautiful sound, some great bait-and-switch moments, angelic harmonies, some (relatively) dirty guitar in the coda to cut through the swirling synths - this is paradise:

  • Reg Bloor, in reply to Russell Brown,

1981 was a full bodied year for everything New Zealand, it had all from politics to music.
Looking at the Wikipedia APRA list I discovered the 1990 country rock sensation Guy Wishart who won with "Don't Take Me For Granted". Never heard of him then but just wish he had released his songs into the US market.

I love how different the Silver Scroll winners from that era are compared to the sort of acts that are popularly remembered as icons of that time. The actual Apra favourites seem like the sort of musicians who you'd now find playing with an elderly acoustic jazz ensemble at a beachy cafe on a Saturday afternoon.

And that makes me wonder - who are the ignored artists of 2015 who will end up as beloved icons of NZ music in 2050.

  • Samuel Scott,

That 1981 list is INSANE. How do you pick the best from that lot? It's not fair. Too good.

This years list is also fantastic but I have really concerns about two of my fave NZ acts ever have two nominations in what a feels like a year they could possibly win. Especially UMO. It really feels like their year and if only Multi-Love was nominated then I'd give them a damn good chance. I actually think Extreme Wealth & Casual Cruelty is the best song on the album though. It's magical.

It's really hard to say isn't it, it's such a diverse list with some obscure quality options. The Randa track 'Rangers' is pretty fantastic. That would be on my list for the year.

The positives you mention are there, all right – but the “CD-stutter” transitions are fingernails-on-chalkboard-level irritating.
