  • Russell Brown, in reply to Hugh Sundae,

That was our first real test streaming to mobiles, about time huh? All Herald streams (Silver Scrolls, Film Awards, Critics Choice Prize etc) will stream to mobiles from now on too.

So was that first run for the new solution you're using? Which product is it? And who directed the live video?

  • Hugh Sundae, in reply to Russell Brown,

Brightcove Live Video Cloud Module. The two main advantages being we send one stream and they do all the transcoding at their end so we can stream from places with smaller pipes.. secondly the HLS capability for mobiles.

Satellite did the feed, Mitchell Hawkes directed and DJ Stipsen DOP'd. They really paid attention to detail I thought. They actually had to use one of OSB's SD trucks because all the HD ones were on the rugby. Was HD in spirit.

    not quite getting it

<facepalm> Can we agree that Selina Gomez is completely unsuited to the song?

    I rather like YouTube-gal Anna Burden’s sweetly low-tech version:

  • bob daktari,

Didn't see it but how were Mt Eden - given the fans were there for Lorde and they are stylistically quite different

Its a very exciting time for local 'pop' music I reckon...

  • Robyn Gallagher, in reply to andrew r,

Wow -- so was it kind of like seeing the Sex Pistols at the 100 club London in 1976 ?

Grown-ups are being so painfully serious about the whole Lorde thing. Under the minimalist beats and bitchy resting face she's still a teen pop star.

    painfully serious

Far from it for me. I just enjoy the music and being able to hear a good interesting voice with clearly enunciated words that have some story to tell. No it isn't a wall of sound nor a complex sophisticated orchestral piece. But it isn't some bloke shouting over a badly played guitar or some girl whining the same three words 27 times over a drum machine and some sampled song from the 70's.

In short it's pop music I actually want to hear. And I don't really want to hear many teen pop stars so yes she's different for me.

That she's 16 and that she has gained world-wide attention and priase is as exciting for me as seeing an althlete perform well on the world stage or seeing a colleague publish in a top tier journal.

I think it's worth being excited for her.

This. Her music is enough different that I don't feel I've heard it before, I can understamd the lyrics and for once it's not being pumped into random places I visit at 120dB.

Now all I want is to be able to buy the album as FLAC or stupid plastic trinket. I'm sure it's here somewhere, I just have to dig around and find it.

Thought: maybe Bjork is the better comparison.

    Yup.

  • Russell Brown,

iHeartRadio NZ has just tweeted the link to this post, which is jolly sporting of them. I wonder when they'll get a landing page posted at the address they're still sending people to.

  • Russell Brown,

Update: I've been discussing this with someone from iHeart, and there's something odd going on with my IP address -- there's a regional redirect that doesn't work for me, even after I've cleared my cache and cookies. Also explains why I never got an email -- because I registered on the US site. It may not be an isolated problem.

And the original stream was geoblocked.

Still disappointing -- and it's quite odd seeing that the takedown request came from IFPI rather than any of the labels. Same deal with the the leaked Miley track a couple of weeks ago.

  • bob daktari, in reply to Russell Brown,

not that odd if you think RIAA and the local version of... and who issues the copyright infringement notices - very rarely / never the label, rather the organisations that work on their behalf

  • Don Christie,

Given Lorde's own laudable (geddit) use of the Internet to get her music out there, it does seem a little short sighted. And yes, I will buy the album when it is released.

laudable (geddit) use of the Internet

I suspect that her use of the internet is just obvious and natural to her. From what I've read she is embedded in a very different culture of connectedness and sharing than the world I grew up in.

And I too will buy the actual CD.

  • Alan Perrott, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

oh, I plus one that and then some, although touting The Wasteland as an influence didn't help. she's a teen alright.

what I puzzle over though is that the label has played hide and seek with her for a fair while yet are launching her without having assembled a band. or do they intend to tour her as a biggie sized karaoke act?
then again, they probably don't have a choice, an artist's shelf life isn't what it was.

the label has played hide and seek

The story we have been told is that she wanted to remain hidden ... at least until her music had spoken first.

  • bob daktari,

I'd hope they don't bother assembling band- keep it simple & true to the recordings / music... added bonus makes for a cheap touring party and allows the audience to focus on the songs/singer

  • Alan Perrott, in reply to bob daktari,

nah, on several counts, not the least being that's a shitload of pressure to put on her. she's good, but she's not that good. not yet anyway.

    Auckland • Since Nov 2006 • 438 posts Report

  • bob daktari,

she seems able to cope with the pressure thus far (to her credit) - her offshore gigs aren't big venues, yet so she has time to learn/hone her on stage craft and presence

She doesn't record with a band so why add one now?

I think the grown ups are stoked that we actually have a teen pop star. Who was our last one? It helps that she's got a good voice.
