  • Richie McGrath,

Prohibition does not work,in saying that however BZP is one of the nastiest drugs I have ever taken.
As for the Zaoui decision it doesn't alter my view of him one bit,he is obviously a lot smarter than his supporters.I don't know anyone who wants him to stay.If he does can we please just have a Zaoui-free day/week/month in the media? Also it is worth noting that Tehran has a street called "Bobby Sands St" so all this nonsense about roman catholics being persecuted in Iran is surely just that!
Having said that Mr Panah has'nt been convicted on any charges in any western democracies that I know of.

  • stephen walker,

According to the media statement released by Mr Tucker:

'Mr Zaoui was clearly a risk to the security of New Zealand when he arrived here in 2002.'

liar, liar, your pants are on fire!

  • Richie McGrath,

With respect Stephen you live in Tokyo where I'm sure theres a blissfull absence of 'Zaouism'

  • stephen walker,

aah, the man was in solitary at Paremoremo for months in the first half of 2003, and there wasn't a single article or news story about him at all. none. from about march to july iirc, was a media blank. he didn't exist. our own gitmo.

if you want a Zaoui-free media zone, please come to Tokyo. i'll buy you a chuhai.

the man is just starting to get the justice he deserves. would you like to back up your slander of him with some actual evidence?

and i don't mean imaginary SIS evidence, either.

    cheers!

  • Michael Fitzgerald,

Richie the Iranian converted to C of E not ROC (as I once got on my ID tags). Your premise of Bobby Sands is therefore wrong.

  • Richie McGrath,

Slander? With a little less respect Stephen I would point out that he has been convicted in two European democracies.
Personally I never thought he was a risk to NZ.Neither was the German ambassador of the 1970's who was revealed to be an ex-member of the Waffen-SS.However I am glad that his past counted against him and he was sent packing!
I bet you're glad you're not Korean/Chinese in Tokyo Stephen!
I wish you all the best in your racist new home.

  • Richie McGrath,

Fair point there Michael,I'm sure the Iranians are well aware of the difference between the Roman Catholic church and the catholic church that Anglicans swear allegiance to!

  • Russell Brown,

Slander? With a little less respect Stephen I would point out that he has been convicted in two European democracies.

And as the Refugee Status Appeals Authority discovered, those convictions were examples of quite how badly the judicial systems of apparently civilised democracies can behave in the case of inconvenient foreigners.

Amnesty has an FAQ that covers all this.

  • Neil Morrison,

the man is just starting to get the justice he deserves.

he has indeed. The NZ authorities carried thru with a process which, although obviously flawed, in the end was governed by respect for fair play and justice.

It's a pity Zaoui did not pay the same respect to the NZ refugee process when he entered the country illegally. He seems to be no more and no less deserving than the many thousands of others who do abide by the UN refugee process which NZ is part of.

    Richie
If they have a Street named after Bobby Sands I'm sure they are well aware of issues at play.

But yeah, those Anglicans will come back soon it is a mighty quibble gone too far over very little really. You find groups of one supporting the stand of the other all the time & vv.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Shit he's bringing science into policy

Not really, Michael - while I understand Anderton has very personal reasons for being passionate about drug policy and suicide prevention (and has done some good work in both areas, to be fair), he has a nasty case of confirmation bias he needs to deal with.

  • Michael Fitzgerald,

Don't we all have a bias?

Asking out of pure ignorance & a pref for a zero level for Alky when driving, but beyond "I drive better stoned" has anyone measured imparement by drugs compared to Alky?

    OT
The death of Cr Condon has led for a few calls (from local politicans) to raise the driving age. Not really interested in this myself (although I was over 25yr before I drove then i got fat hmm) just wondering if any anti drink driving lobby group is campaigning against Cr with DIC convictions. A bit puritanical I know.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Don't we all have a bias?

Certainly, but I do try and temper mine with rational thought. I also have a cranky preference for Ministers of the Crown who know what they're talking about - and pay serious attention to people who do, even if they're not saying what you want to hear. It's easy to crank up another fatuous moral panic over the chemical nasty de jour - serious and thoughtful public policy not based on junk science and statistical illiteracy is quite another.

And MPs really have no excuse considering they've access to an eye-watering array of resources, expert advice and one of the best libraries (and most skilled gang of researchers and librarians in the country). Getting a cheap rise out of Jacqui Dean is all very nice (and well-deserved), but she's not an associate minister of health with her name on a pretty shoddy piece of legislation. Anderton is.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I just had a proper look at the Webstock speakers list. Derek Powazek and Heather Champ are going to be there! They are, like, my interweb idols from back in the day. I'm going to beg, borrow or steal a ticket to be there.
