  • recordari, in reply to Thomas Johnson,

Great stuff, and vastly preferable to Wham imho

Vastly superior to a whole hoard of music I could think of. But still like a bit of Wham, in the right circumstances. And yes, those circumstances do exist. IMhO.

  • Ross Mason,

Naturopaths reckon the MoH doesn't say enough about the ill-effects of immunisation.

And from the link to the Naturopaths media release:

The NZSN are disturbed by the plan to issue all children with a certificate of vaccination on entering school.

Just after my first swimming lesson in Primer 1, I got a certificate that said I could put my head under water (heh, some may say I shouldn't have lifted it but I digress). There were places for stickers where I could show further swimming achievements like reaching 25 yds, 50 yds, life saving, 300 yds, 400yds etc. I got all those eventually.

Funny, somehow I think it enabled me to survive some close calls in pools, the surf and rivers.

I can say the same thing about getting immunised as a kid. I am glad I didn't get polio.

Ignore the URL on the end, it's irrelevant now (actually I just reregistered it and am open to suggestions as to what should live there) -- but I wrote every single one of those 1.5m high letters with that flax stick myself, and by crikey it felt *good*.

Also: tonsilitis when I was 23. Sweat dripping off my forearms; should probably have been in hospital. But I remember the density dreams... fizzing spheres and pillars of impossibly tiny yet extraordinarily heavy metal; same dreams I had when I was 5. Boys have those dreams when they have fevers. It's the matrix.

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Greg Wood,

I had extra-hype versions of the dreams I’ve always had – which generally involve me and friends past and present, in a variety of shifting settings (in this case, at one point, an undreamt-of version of New Plymouth). Communication seemed to be a theme.

I don’t ever recall dreaming of structure in the way you describe. But, then, I was crap at woodwork.

Nasty tummy-bug, sometime in the mid-nineties, living with a stoner flatmate who wouldn't have noticed if I died - I spent a feverish night convinced that all the separate bits of my body were sick women and I had to run around a battlefield tending to them all.

Cherries stored in a bag previously used for meet, as we later found out. We were travelling at the time. Prague was nice, but there is a dark side I didn't expect to see.

Chicken, in the work cafeteria. Extreme weight loss. Two days in bed. The flat I was in had an outisde toilet as well as an inside one, so I thought I'd take pity on my flatmates and do any business that needed doing in the outside one. Only flaw in that plan was that the urge to DO STUFF came on FAR too quickly to even begin to make it all the way outside. Sorry, flatmates :(

I don't ever remember having food poisoning. Re Colin - he's a very cool cat. I can't wait till he gets older and lets all and sundry have a go at loving him up. My cat got there eventually, and now at 14, she is enjoying the privilege that comes with being the only surviving animal in the house (currently - who knows when the next pup will arrive?). She's still in fairly rude health. The vet suggested blood tests because of her age, and I reminded him what happened the last time he gave blood tests to one of my beloved fur babies.

i remember almost passing out trying to get from the bathroom to the kitchen sink for a glass of water.

had been staying with a mate, and when his flatmates got up (this had kicked off at about 2am) their only comment was "poooo!!! when you leaving?!!"

i was so sick i could barely get to my car, stopped twice for a sleep on the way back to auckland.

    the trots for three days.

you cn imagine i wasn't so keen on the double-down.

  • Lilith __,

Regarding tetanus vaccination - I had one becuase it was required for going on school camp when I was 15. Didn't see school camp, was in bed for 2 weeks with fever and the worst muscle pains I've ever had. I'd had glandular fever from which I hadn't fully recovered, and my doctor said that wouldn't matter.

I think vaccination has some value, but not when you're sick !

Mind you, I was disappointed that Sue Kedgley didn’t seem to know any of this when she got a opportunity to respond.

My assumption, watching the programme at the time, was that she was so gob-smacked and/or overwhelmed by a descending red (green?) mist that she was unable to respond coherently.

Malaria and dysentry, in Kenya. Got bitten after eating dinner with some locals at dusk, no repellent. Presumably the dinner was also the source of the gastrointestinal infection.

Amazing how a good going fever makes you feel icey cold. Don't remember having vivid dreams unfortunately. Previously I hadn't really appreicated how much easier it is to have diarrhoea with a sit down toilet than a squat loo.

Yes, I went years without boosters and 'flu shots when I was ill because my immune system was in overdrive - the doctor wasn't willing to take the risk of me getting way sicker (or alternatively, the vaccination being completely ineffective with me thinking I was protected).

The slightly depressing truth about vaccinations is that they work on a population basis, not necessarily on any one individual. It's the same with pharmaceuticals: a particular drug may be said to "work" if it saves the life of one in a hundred people taking it. I think the protection rate with vaccinations is generally higher than that :-) but it's no guarantee you won't get the illness.

After Hilary Calvert spouted her drivel at the Backbenchers, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole audience didn't end up with E.coli.
Couldn't help wondering if she has modelled her bro-tel on a battery farm. You could almost imagine her chopping off the heads of the bad layers.

Aw c'mon, I still find it pretty funny to think of all those punters looking out at the alluring come hither eyes of one of our elected representatives when they go for their payday roll in the hay.

Re freaky dreams: A severe case of sunstroke had me locked in a bizarre nightmare in which I was doing math homework over and over, trying to solve some problem. Finally, in my dream I believe I'd cracked it, and woke excitedly to scrawl the answer down, then finally collapsed into decent sleep. In the morning these scrawlings were hilariously indecipherable garbage. But it felt so profound at 4am.

Use sunblock when you ski, seriously. I lost my whole face.

Well, yes. She's offered her own image for use in a large outdoor display advertisement for a tenant that sells sexual services. There's nothing wrong with any of that, but it gets a bit silly if no one's allowed to mention sex when they talk about it. And it is a somewhat unusual thing for a landlord to do.

I actually tweeted something along the lines of whatever Calvert's eyes were saying to me in that billboard, it wasn't come hither. I thought that was alright, and true. Bomber's blog post on a similar theme crossed a line into tacky and wrong.
