Even Thomas Friedman has noted that a vote for the Repulicans this time would have been rewarding incompetence. He goes on to make quite a few other claims in this opinion piece from the NY Times.
‘In this election, the American public rejected these narrow notions of the common good,” argued Sandel. “Most people now accept that unfettered markets don’t serve the public good.
Markets generate abundance, but they can also breed excessive insecurity and risk. Even before the financial meltdown, we’ve seen a massive shift of risk from corporations to the individual.
Obama will have to reinvent government as an instrument of the common good — to regulate markets, to protect citizens against the risks of unemployment and ill health, to invest in energy independence.”

National Radio NZ carried both speeches live, in full. I switched back to the radio after TV back to... whatever Key and English are bitching about Labour about at the moment.
Did anyone catch all of McCain's speech? I went into the supermarket, but I thought I caught all of his "thank you to" people, and he didn't mention Palin at all. Did I miss it?

yeah, not convinced by obamas speech. i thought mccain's was better.
mccain was a guy who could finally say what he wanted, whereas obama was pressing himself into the presidential mould. i actually related to mccain more.

I did note one niggle here, questioning the relevance of Reverend King, that other great orator. Craig, the celebratory tone seems perfectly justified from where I sit. Incredibly so.
That's one powerful lineage we're talking about - the struggle of centuries, of slaves and lynchings, of untold thousands of lives sacrificed, of segregated schools and buses, of stirring calls to dream a better future, of riots in Watts and South-Central, of any means necessary, and now being able to see a face like yours in charge - so I'm hoping we can all show some of McCain's grace here, if not MLK's. We surely deserve that as we toast a moment of beautiful triumph.
So bless the French whose struggle also fed the American story, and the Chinese who are part of its future. Break out the bubbles and the giant fireworks. Explosions all round.
