  • Myles Thomas, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Sorry for flogging a dead horse, but did anyone suggest to Curran that if her party is serious about public television they might want to rethink putting a kill switch on the funding next time? Blah blah of course I’d say that etc. but really…

that really IS a dead horse, the Labour Party policy is totally different to the previous govt. We need to keep the heat on them to make sure the next incarnation of PSTV is funded independently of Treasury - levy on Sky and ISPs (the new broadcasters)

Top Shelf and RB did what any good production company would do, and hit the phones, worked contacts, tried to find a new home.

And it is heartening to see that effort pay off. Producers are part of a great team.

What about bringing some local women from your audience onto the stage

My understanding is that it's driven by whatever topic is being discussed. Might be a place to suggest experts who are not white men.

Congrats! Presumably you'll have to make time for ads now?

What a shame (in both senses) for NZ that TVNZ7 is going down.

  • Steve Parks, in reply to Damian Christie,

The difference between Media 7 and Back Benches is that we’re made by TVNZ, produced internally as part of News & Current Affairs. So when the announcement was made to close TVNZ 7, Top Shelf and RB did what any good production company would do, and hit the phones, worked contacts, tried to find a new home. Whereas TVNZ clearly aren’t going to do that, at least not outside of TVNZ. We lack, if you will, a ‘champion’. And given neither Wallace nor I own the concept/name, it’s not ours to shop around.

Are TVNZ not interested in hosting it directly on TV1 or 2? It seems to me that it's a pretty successful show within its limitations (such as a lack of promotion outside TVNZ7 ads), and I assume it isn't a particularly expensive show to make.

Alternatively, would it not be possible to change the name and tweak the concept a bit, and then shop around?

  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Hilary Stace,

That’s great news but can I make a suggestion? Please can you have some more girls on your panel? What about bringing some local women from your audience onto the stage

Can I ask why? It seems to me that Russ has a pretty balanced gender split and considering we have to pull our experts from a small pool insisting on a particular gender would be counter-productive.

As for having Sofie and Jackie on the panel, sheesh, it's only a half hour show.

Wow, you know something about Russell that we don't know??

But seriously, does anyone have any actual figures on that? Talking heads in current affairs programmes are predominantly men.

And I think perhaps PAS has more regular women commenters than most places on the internet, but that doesn't mean we couldn't use a lot more.

    Ladies! De-lurk! I know you're out there. :-)

  • Hilary Stace, in reply to Steve Barnes,

I haven't been keeping stats but I would disagree about gender balance - my estimate would be about 80/20 in favour of men. It is not a problem unless you want women to watch/engage with the programme in bigger proportions than this.

I'm sure Russell and the team have tried hard to get women to participate. Their lack of success reflects other common issues that this thread has revealed: the assumption that media experts are predominantly male; and that women do not see themselves as experts and certainly do not want to get up in public and talk about their expertise.

  • Sacha, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I agree about the ratio and that panels with diversity can be more interesting to watch.

However, when a show focuses on common media coverage of issues, it invariably ends up engaging the prevailing discourses - and experts - in various public fields. Media7/3 can try hard for a range of perspectives but it can't on its own overturn the bias in the society and industry that it covers.

In any case, women do not seem to only watch TV shows featuring women any more than Koreans only watch shows featuring people of their culture. The situation is more complex than that.

Interesting post recently about what was required to get women to present at a tech conference.

    Interesting blog post thanks, Sacha.

Yes I know it is complex about who watches when and why but when there is no reflection of the diversity that makes up society it just gets boring.

I'm a great fan of the Court Report and the stand out programme for me recently was the one on the parent carers case. No men in flash suits - just a couple of mothers, some young female family members, and a nice motherly lawyer. With host Linda Clark it became a chat about the impact of the case on real people's lives.

We do think about it a lot -- and half the Media7 team are women. But it's not always easy to find women panelists who have the necessary connection to the topic, who are confident on camera -- and who are willing to be to on TV. We have had some really strong women on panels -- Tracey Walker the lawyer for one.
