  • BenWilson, in reply to SteveH,

That is true, but in isolation, the outcome of a 16 year old getting jail for having consenting sex with a 15 year old is probably not the one they want at all. Now we know that there was rape of a 13 year old who did want to press charges and got talked out of it, the above arguments are all pretty much finished. This is a scandal.

  • Russell Brown,

    Here's the Fairfax version.

The police have been lying since this broke. It's appropriate now to start talking about police corruption.

There must surely be a Commission of Inquiry.

    Triggers, obvs.

Is this the extra stuff you mentioned you couldn't talk about earlier or should we be bracing ourselves for more?

  • Kracklite,

Oh God, can this get any worse?

I thought that the pigs had plumbed the depths in the Louise Nicholas case, but this is even filthier.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/207530/Hales-looked-at-second-police-file

A couple of police named Hales involved in the Mt Maunganui affair all those years ago. Brothers as it happens. Undoubtedly just a coincidence.

  • Kracklite,

So that's it. Our police are not merely incompetent, they're corrupt. I expect the inevitable whitewash.

  • slarty, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

You know, Slarty, I really hope you’re being a wee bit snarky there because it would be nice if “those poor buggers” elected a union president who’d speak out as least as vigorously as he assassinates the character of anyone who dares suggest an armed police force might just create more problems than it solves.

After all, there's only 9,000 of them to fight the machine. It must be tough, doing the right thing in the face of all the procedural barriers...

    Yes. Thank you Craig.

  • Lucy Telfar Barnard,

I'm unspeakably furious. I was quite prepared to give the police the benefit of the doubt and think maybe they were just taking their time to get the case together. But once again, despite their years and years of promising and swearing that they treat the sexual assaulted better now, properly now, that complainants are safe... This shit.

  • Lisa_J, in reply to Martin Brown,

I’ve just read the article you linked, Martin. This case was always deeply distressing, but things have taken a very chilling turn. The disturbing record of the NZ police with regard to handling complaints of sexual offending, and indeed the allegations about the behaviour of some of their own, sink to the back of my mind over time, and I assume that they have pulled themselves into the 21st century and that their attitudes have changed. I have been prepared to show them good faith and let them turn over a new leaf.

But the police themselves always seem to find a way to remind me of their murky past and shock me all over again. A 13 year old sexual assault complainant given the brush off and insulted into the bargain. And is there a link between the various Hales? Adding it all up, it feels like a horror movie. Seriously. My skin crawls.

"Mr Tamihere also levelled some criticism at the media reporting of the interview, saying “there’s a bunch of people in the media that hate our guts”:

Yeah right , first its the girls fault now its the media’s fault .

Tamihere will consolidate: It'll be the stupid little girls in the media’s fault.

I thought that way, too. I don't think that way now. At all. You were right, Russell.

This is all making me sick to my stomach, and I can't help but get the feeling much worse is going to be uncovered during the investigation.

  • Kracklite,

Let's not forget that when Dame Margaret Bazley was conducting her inquiry, the Police Association, led by Greg O'Connor, hired a private investigator to find dirt in the hope that they could blackmail her or discredit her work. The police in NZ have a very sick culture, and it's going to take more than just an inquiry to fix it.

  • nzlemming, in reply to Kracklite,

I have personal experience that they stonewalled that inquiry as much as they could and I'm reliably informed that nothing has changed since that time, regardless of the promises made.

Or better still, bring Tony Fitzgerald QC out of retirement. Especially if the Roastbusters affair blows out into Arthur Allan Thomas proportions and becomes Roastbustergate.

I'm not at all surprised, so Danielle's "allegation" looks all the more plausible. I also know people who have been victims of police corruption and rape and I too have to be deliberately vague in order to protect them from further persecution.

  • DexterX,

We need to have confidence in the Police - The budget considerations no doubt stretched to accommodate the KDC raid in Jan 2012 - so the Government can see to it they accommodate the resourcing required for the police investigate complaints of sexual assault and the gang rape of minors properly.

The police officers who handled the initial complaint case and the chain of police who have misled the entire country should be stood down and the Minister should initiate a commission of inquiry - if this doesn't happen the opposition should constantly call for the resignation of the Minister of Police and an inquiry.

Dependant on the outcome of the inquiry those that misled the public and the minister either wilfully or by omission should be gone as should the officers who handled the 2011 initial complaint.
