I say Party Central(e) should be at some persons Pt Chev pad. Having a few thousand people over for white wine and Xbox Rugby after a test match should be pretty mellow.

Party Central has caused one of my first feelings of genuine cultural cringe. When I consider what used to happen in Ozzie when there was a big event, I just feel ashamed of NZ. We're going to get a real wake up call that stinginess is not a value widely admired in the rest of the world.
-
Incompetence is also not an admirable value. They could have thrown a billion dollars at this, and they would have still made an embarrassing bollocks of it.

Party at Russell Brown's Place! That's got a ring to it.

Do you think John Key has ever actually partied? Like, real hard-as?
-
And if you can work out what's actually going on on the basis of this morning's Herald news story, you're doing better than I am.
No even going to try -- can we please decide who's going to be massively incompetent and stick it? Not seeing the need for a central-regional-local government partnership here.

No, otherwise he'd be telling us all to harden the fuck up and find a nice quiet parking lot.

Get the octopus to decide where it goes and be done with it.

Actually, we'll have our house extensions done by then. I'm thinking about buying a video projector on Trade Me and screening the games on our expansive new deck. Happy to consult with party central planners, for a fee.

I reckon he'd be a laugh on E.

I have slugs in my garden if you need them.

Recall all the bytes expended here on Trev Mallard’s waterfront stadium? Pointless debate fatigue is setting in.
Has Johhny partied? If the ‘slug’ or whatever eventuates he should be required to have a couple of lines, half bottle of voddy, and keep hydrated with cold beer till dawn just for annoying us.

Parity Central...
all things being even and fair...
I personally think any council run public RWC areas should be family friendly and alcohol free... leaving a "level playing field" for the rate and licence paying hospitality industry...
otherwise it sends a mixed message to the public about the seemingly parasitic attachment of alcohol consumption to sports events...won't anyone think of the kids!
and stop pandering to the booze barons!I note the Chch RWC space in the square is proposing to have booze areas - Bad idea from a council that is (allegedly) trying to deal with the problems of inner city drinking as it is...
- weird stuff, and these are the decisions of adults!!It would just be so impressive to see one of them make a family-friendly space, those who want alcohol will make other arrangements...
and doesn't McCully come across as a petulant brat? The Govt should never have poked its nose into the Auckland affair any way, they are not event organisers, there are more important things for them to be getting on with you'd think...

Someone must have already tipped him off about RB's house extension.

Can I inject a dose of reality? Having 'party central' on a wharf located at some remove from the downtown core of bars and other delights was always going to be difficult, and frankly, given the propensity for winter in Auckland to get nasty around September, impossible. Who in their right mind would abandon the prospect of a nice draught in the Occidential or a fine pinot noir at the Wine Loft to traipse down to a space that wouldn't be pleasant in a southerly and cold to boot?
McCully et al is dreaming - ironically the best advertisement for leaving certain politicians out of event planning, amongst other things - but there's no signs as Minister of RWC he's going to back down - it's his event (he's an old skool politician - he owns things that properly belong to the public) and bugger it if no-one comes to his precious slug.
I sincerely hope some bright young student is keeping a close eye on this. It would make for a great Masters research project.
-
Besides Key and McCully does anyone else actually support Party Central? I've yet to hear anyone supporting it.
-
Murray McCully is, frankly, just an arsehole who can't seem to get on with anyone. Anything he touches apears to turn to shit. John Key is full of stupid ideas designed to Garner a cheap headline in a compliant press. DUDE WHERE IS MY CYCLEWAY?
Combine the incompetence of McCully, and the expediency of Key with Aucklands Byzantine local government politics and did anyone expect anything else?

Which immediately instantiated an image of JK quivering with indecision over what to hug first........

Depends who he's negotiating a trade agreement with at the time.

from the Herald:
Since Mr Key announced plans for party central in June last year, his vision of "a mass public opening ceremony and the magnet for fans who can't be at games" has been a planning and political shambles.
Did he mean a mass public opening of party central or of the RWC? If the latter, isn't it the job of the RWC 2011 company to organise that, not the govt?
-
I visited Auckland for a few days while the America's Cup was on and found the whole waterfront alive and interesting. Why should the RWC need a special John Key Monument? What's wrong with the existing bars and spaces?

Better still... Or even better still...
Seriously though, it's looking more and more like someone can't organise a piss-up in a brewery.
-
I'm with Christopher Dempsey here - why would you want to be down on the wharf in an Auckland winter? It'll bemiserable.
And I'm old enough to remember just how consistently ghastly and tasteless so much of McCully's wardrobe and look has been over the years - the idea that a philistine like him wold be involved in a decision about aesthetics is ludicrous.
-
I've said this before, but who the heck puts drunks on a shipping wharf anyway - your average drunk Englishman (or Welshman to that) does not float well and struggles to swim.
-
John Key being all loved up whilst simultaneously getting down to the trancey delights of something like Cosmic Gate was not an image I really needed today. Thanks for that.
-
I'm surprised a few more businesses haven't tried to compete for the title of Party Central. The casino stands a pretty good chance of pissing all over some waterfront sheds, as do a number of event centers. Anywhere you can hold a big party, basically. Western Springs isn't a hard walk from Eden Park.
