  • Geoff Lealand,

  • Nick Russell,

Susied (from the verb “to Susie) – to be the subject of an intense and vigorous interview by someone far, far smarter than you.

Celebrates a national icon and is also a refreshing celebration of the importance of the media in a functioning democracy. I’m not in the habit of praising Simon Bridges, but I heartily appreciate this contribution to the English language.

  • Euan Mason,

C-questration – OK, this word doesn’t exist yet, but it should. It’s relevant, urgent, and it’s preoccupied in New Zealanders over the last year. So let’s make it WOTY. It can then go forth and prosper.

  • HiDiHi,

“decriminalize” (Marijuana) Because we’re finally talking about.

“Crisis” (Climate Change) Because we’re not talking about it enough.

“Impeachment”: because of its potential global impact.

“We utterly reject and condemn you”: most powerful local phrase I’ve heard.

I’m with Andre on this. (Extinction) Rebellion. I put it in brackets however because ‘Rebellion’ on its own has been a recurrent word – from Hong Kong, Lebanon, Iraq, France, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia (sorry I know South and Central America best).

  • David Hood,

Just returning to further (and more seriously this time) justify my earlier choice of “climate strike”, because the mass action (and it’s growth) is a new thing of 2019- demanding a response rather than just acknowledging there is a problem.

‘Virtue signalling’ – still prevalent among those with performance and anger issues coupled with an internet connection.
(…and as opposed to ‘Verjus signalling’ which literally is ‘sour grapes’!)

‘Impeachment’ – obviously derived from the Imp every High Official has on Each shoulder, and the consequences of listening to the wrong one..
