  • Emma Hart,

Okay, people, we've had a slight change of plan, and it's a good'un.

We have an open invitation to turn up at David and Jennifer's place from 1 on Saturday afternoon. Bring drinks and nibbly things. There will be running about in the back yard and a treehouse we've been assured adults are allowed to play in.

As the afternoon progresses, there may be embarkation to more imbibulous premises if people are so inclined.

Email/DM me or David if you need the address on Avonside Drive. Or someone more artistically inclined could make us a big "Public Address" sign to put in the front yard.

But seriously. Yous are all invited. I shall expect to see new faces. You hear me, Lilith?

I can confirm that both the backyard and the treehouse are top bloody notch.

  • David Haywood,

Joe Wiley: very glad to hear that you're in the arms of your whanau (but hopefully we can extract you on Saturday?).

Kris V: extremely sorry to hear about your house -- if you feel like popping in on Saturday we'd love to see you (but understand that you may prefer to spend your birthday elsewhere).

Ross Mason: superb idea! We should get Emma to christen our celebrations by smashing a champagne bottle with the hammer, "God bless this party, and all who sail in her..."

I was about to say exactly the same thing. Even so, smashing a full bottle of champers, just because? So Christchurch.

In Dunedin we drink the alcohol first, and then smash the bottle. Best of both worlds.

  • Kris V,

David... the treehouse does sound mighty tempting... I've always been a sucker for a decent treehouse! (probably 'cos I never had one as a kid)

will do my best to call in, even if it's just for a quick drink & a climb up the tree. It will be a nice change from unpacking - we move on Friday :)

    sooooo much to organise!!

Cancel the Hammer Party. Cancel the Hammer Party. Gerry might turn up!!!! And your guests might find some "nails"!

    This from Andrew Geddis:

Again, I'm not saying Gerry Brownlie (or any other Minister) conciously intends misusing these powers. But once you give a man a hammer, suddenly everything starts to look like a nail. And so it is with Ministers and the power to remake law swiftly and decisively.

  • David Haywood,

Maybe Gerry has put some pressure on the council.

We've just this afternoon received a letter telling us that there's a problem with the sewer on our street, and that we're not allowed to use it. In other words: no lavatory, showers, washing, or anything else that puts water down our drains.

This could present a problem for Saturday.

Not much makes me laugh out loud at 6am, but that did.

    Oh shit....

Now about that grey water collection sytem you were going to set up? The Clivus Multrum?

When I built our house (mumble) years ago I approached the council to see if I could get a clivus installed. Ha. Need to get health approval. So off I trudged to the Hutt Valley Medical Director of Health and gave him the spiel about how good they were. No dice I am afraid. They just could not get their head around it when I suggested that the "remains" from the clivus could be used to fertilise the garden and grow tomatoes in. That was the eeewww moment for them.

The upshot was I could not put it "in" the house but I could build a seperate "septic facility" 5 m (I think) from the abode. I was not allowed a covered way to it either. But, and here is the killer, I HAD to still have a connection to the sewer line that passed my place. By law.

Just investigating the possibility of diverting the grey water away from the sewerage system, and into the bush at the back of our section. That might save us from having to move out for a few days...

    The Clivus Multrum?

That's such an annoying story -- you have my sympathy! I've heard several similar stories when it comes to composting toilets.

Reminds me of when I looked at installing solar water heating in 19-mumble-mumble: the local power board said that they would apply a surcharge to our electricity bill on the basis that we wouldn't use as much if our hot water was heated by solar. Devastating logic.

P.S. The hammer has had a lot of use already, I de-mortared about 200 bricks yesterday.

  • Emma Hart,

Okay, obviously Saturday is problematic now. So we have changed the venue. The plan is now:

    - Hagley Park, picnic by the children's playground at 1pm, and
    - Dux, less child- and more alcohol-oriented comisercelebrations from 3pm.

Hopefully, this is okay for people.

yeah, Canterbury appears to be more or less immune to your Massive Storm. That said, we had unforecast rain and shitness today.

Also, I don't appear to be able to log in to non-Twitter social services today, so if people could distribute this information, that would be much appreciated.
