If you mean is it a fair overview of the post-quakes situation, I believe that it's a pretty good snapshot of how things were at the time the article was published (September 20}.
I don't get to read the letters to the Press, but I've been looking at the online comments. There have been some very ugly sentiments expressed, including a few that seem to stem from outright snobbery. You don't have to be too paranoid to suspect an orchestrated campaign to portray quake victims as opportunists. Brownlee, elements of the insurance industry, and the Parker faction of the City Council all have a vested interest in hoping that they'll give up and roll over.
For me the sudden surge of support for Bob Jones's opinion piece on rebuilding the CBD is an indication of how fast the mood here is evolving. It's certainly blindsided The Press and the City Council, both of which have long fancied that they can manage the public mood. People are plainly fed up with being fobbed off with cynical window dressing such as "Have Your Say". What's changed since Peter Bills's article appeared is that they're moving on from blaming one another to demanding realistic answers.

That is precisely what I am hearing from whanau in the eastern suburbs.
People who expressed anything but the “official” version (“We’re all in this together, and anyone who runs away or says different, is letting the side down”)

I have no patience for reading all the “spin” too when I believe, (from the outside looking in) that it is insulting to the intelligence of Cantabrians, no matter how polite you all are. A quick glance at the Herald has unfortunately nothing but dismal news and virtually nothing about what this Government is doing about anything for Christchurch. I guess they are “relaxed ” about it now. :(
Not that I think te Herald is a great information source but it is common to the country and available for a broken down city

As part of the group that owns the widely-circulated Christchurch Star giveaway, they're only as parochial as they choose to be. For example, their online photo & video coverage of the quakes rivaled the local Fairfax stuff.

A great article by the marvellously well-informed Janine Starks. Like her earlier piece on red zone issues, it's a refreshing change from the usual mealy-mouthed timidity.
A pity that the Press has attempted to headline it as bait for the usual idiot's auction of online comments.

At the risk of becoming a single-issue poster(ior), I have been having a nose around the Royal Commission into the Earthquakes website, just because I'd like to know what the learned are saying without the filter of a journalist and his/her deadlines and word limits. http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/
The submissions are available printed and on video.One that caught my eye today and seems very under-reported is this: http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/documents-by-key/20111003.24 I haven't seen any analysis of this submission by Rachel Ford and Ed Radley, and I don't understand the technical bits well enough to draw conclusions, so I'd be interested to read comments from someone who can sort the wheat from the chaff.

They appear to refer to the same largely ignored risk assessment report prepared by OPUS Consultants for ECAN, mentioned in Joel Cayford's revelatory posting from last July.Interesting use of the term "Geologist grapevine".
