A number of WCDMA 850 MHz capable mobiles will work on the XT network as long as they have been unlocked by their original provider. Telecom will not restrict which phones can be used on the XT Mobile Network so if you purchase a Telecom SIM you can do with it what you like, but Telecom cannot guarantee the customer experience of a phone that is not sourced from and supported by Telecom.
So, on the assumption that Vodafone ain't going to unlock my iPhone for me, I'd need to jailbreak it to use it on XT with a Telecom SIM?
That sounds sort of ... rebellious.
Is there the prospect in the near term of the iPhone becoming non-exclusive to Vodafone in NZ?

Is your Voda iPhone definitely locked? I didn't think NZ providers did that?

My understanding is that Vodafone Iphones are not locked. That said may paralell imported ones may be - and unlocking is not trivial. Its a trap for the uninformed.

That second Geekzone link appears to go somewhere other than an official FAQ -- does it need fixing?
I'm not buying anything from anyone until I can get a Palm Pre...
[Stephen -- you're right. The URL was missing a character. It's actually here -- RB]

It's un official ...

Did we really only ask three questions?
-
Sorry, typo. But it goes to a discussion about Bluetooth problems, not anything to do with the XT n/work.
-
Did we really only ask three questions?
I gather they were aggregated. But feel free to ask another one ...
-
Stephen,
Readers asked nearly 132 questions. However there was a great deal of similarity between them - and probably 2 thirds were different versions of those three.
We are compiling a summary of the questions to post shortly and when its posted will link it here.

@alastair
I think that was me not Stephen :)
I want to know about coverage. I got me a iPhone and I've been pretty shocked at the coverage compared to my previous Telecom phones. So will there be more/better/worse coverage with the new network?
Please answer generally and with specific mention of mobile internet access. (I will be marking on accuracy and punctuation)

My iPhone has been one of the most wondrous purchases of an inglorious life, but: can I come to your house and play with your Pre when it arrives?
-
My Nokia N95 does not work on Telecom - much to my disappointment.

Did we really only ask three questions?
I asked about roaming charges, having been burned badly by that on Vodafone a couple of weeks ago, but the answer was just along the lines of "we'll announce pricing when it comes out".

Look for phones that are 850Mhz UMTS - NOT GSM. A lot of people have seen the 850 number on a phone and thought YAY it will work (e.g. Blackberry Storm). But that's 850 GSM which is really quite common.
Plam Pre looks well nice if just for the inductive charging sexiness. Given Telecom have the Palm Treo Pro I suspect the Pre might make a showing here. Released next week in the US I believe?

Vodafone does not lock handsets.
Also, before anyone asks, Vodafone doesn't have an exclusive deal with Apple for the iPhone and we've never claimed to have one. We're the only seller in NZ, but it's not exclusive.

Because we live off the beaten track, coverage is really important. At the moment mobile broadband is mobile narrow, sometimes nada, band. Our cell phones leap from great reception to no reception in the blink of an eye.
Can you ask telecom if they'll create a plan that gives great discounts on international calls to loyal customers? It is frustrating having to explain over and over to telecom staff that we don't have a landline so we don't want to be told, yet again, that we should make all our international calls on our landline and then to be told that they don't know what rates the plan they're recommending has for international calls off and on-peak times
-
I'm interested in coverage too. Our office is in a shadow, yet I heard 850MHz does a better job of penetrating trees and buildings. Could this mean I rejoin the mobile telecommunications world once more???

Well one point on coverage for mobile broadband is that Telecom's network is ONLY 3G (soon to be 3.5G). So I believe there is no point anywhere on their 97% coverage map where data should be dramatically slower - i.e. if you can get a voice connection you're probably going to be getting a decent data connection as well.

Please form an orderly queue... you're not the first person to ask!
But anyway, of course.

You mean ... I was wrong? Twice ?

I don't like to complain, but the answer to the question on iPhone compatibility was a bit of a corporate spin non-answer. The kind of thing I would expect from the FAQ on a website.
This kind of interactive thingy is an opportunity (I would have thought) for someone in the know to say "well, we're not supposed to say, and don't tell anyone I told you, but, yep they work SWEET!".
Other than iPhone compatibility, I'm only interested in pricing to be honest. I've used both a Telecom 3G card and a Vodafone vodem and my non-scientific testing suggests the current Telecom technology feels much faster anyway (and it seems as fast for browsing the net as my home broadband connection).
Therefore, I am happy with the current thing that connects me to the net, but it would be nice if I could afford to actually use it.

Belt,
Do we really all have to turn up at ye local shoppe at 9am on Friday morning? Is there any chance some of us can get some of the paperwork taken care of a day or two earlier, even though the provisioning isn't going to happen until Friday? I prefer to work smart, no hard, and I prefer not to be standing in a line if it can be avoided? As for an account I'd like to pay about $40 max a month for 1G of data please. Any more would not seem like much of a step forward. Thanks.
-
Belt,
@Sam - as I understand it, and I may be completely wrong, is that the iPhone's will ONLY work on the 2100 in-fill frequency found in the 3 major centers, but nowhere else. Someone else can correct me if they like. (One of the reasons I prefer XT over VF is the 100% 3G coverage instead of the patchwork quilt).
-
Belt - the iPhone 3G runs on 850Mhz and 2100Mhz (so will work everywhere on XT). The first gen iPhone is not 3G so won't work at all.
