    A: Yes, these guys and girls are going to get a huge financial bonus as well as an executive dinner and TV appearances.

    @belt I was personally happy to see this question asked and answered so in my opinion the ffunnell exercise was a success.

    Not sure where you got the idea that anyone was happy with the delayed launch.

    Well, it hasn't finished yet, and I think it's been useful. Just approach it in good faith. It's extremely unusual for a large corporate to take the leap into a forum like this.

    You are correct that the tower you show is also an XT Network tower. This means that if you can see it from your house you will have very good XT Network dataspeeds and call quality.

    Alastair,
    Yes there will be a couple of deals released on Friday. I'd recommend you take a look at the new plans first so you can do an apples for apples comparison to your current setup - and get the feel for how the new plans work. Then check out the special deals - and get the guys instore to work out if the deal is going to work for you.

    Re your marketing question...
    XT isn't a reference to Xtra although interesting you took that out of it. I checked with the brand guys and they say that XT isn't really supposed to have an explicit meaning - it's called an "ingredient mark" alittle like Intel inside or GT on a car (altho GT does mean something!). When I pushed them though they said it means "Xtreme Technology". Essentially though it's a quick reference way to identify which phones are available on the XT network (as we're still running the CDMA network and devices on that).

    From my perspective, I'm just pleased we have something simple to call the new network other than "the new network", WCDMA or 850Mhz - which the average person doesn't really understand or care about.

    Hope that solves the mystery.

    I asked about the shared data cap - and whether it might be on the horizon. Short answer is no. Longer answer is it'll likely come when penetration levels are much higher in NZ.

    Agree. But rather than thinking "rubbish" can I encourage you to recycle your old phone when you upgrade to the XT Network. We have a deal with Starship - every recycled phone equals $15 for Starship. The store staff are apparently going to have envelopes in store and can recycle the phones for you. Some good has to come from them!

    @Paul Brislen - Great stuff to see Vodafone here gatecrashing the party. Competition should be cheeky! Fair enough re the visual voicemail. I've always just put it down to kiwis missing out again because our market size isn't worth the effort. Glad to hear that you guys are working on it.

    @Rebecca Smith - Thanks for the response. Good to see your participation. I grudgingly understand the need to do as the corporate lawyers tell you, though we must all keep pushing back on them!

    I've received one of Telecom's Starship packs with the phone-recycling envelope (which I will actually use) -- and an XT Network SIM, good for a month's voice and data.

    So I will in fact soon find out just how well an iPhone runs on the new network.

    XT Network is Go

    Tomorrow morning Telecom stores around New Zealand will open and customers will be able to enjoy the XT Mobile Network.

    On the eve of launch, Telecom has revealed its suite of pricing plans that incorporate the concepts of One Rate pricing, per second billing after the first minute and the innovative option of shared calling plans. Some exciting handset offers are also being released.

    Each plan is designed to give customers certainty, make it easy to understand what’s on offer, and provide customers with the flexibility that they have asked us for says Telecom Retail CEO, Alan Gourdie.

    The press release is accompanied by some charts in the PDF Version

    The PDF version contains charts which contain some information about consumer plan costs.

    This morning I have signed up for the XT Network competition here.

    After entering my details, and leaving the "Yes, I would like to receive further information from Telecom that may be of interest to me. *" box UNCHECKED, when the submit button is pressed the follow appears ...

    "One or more fields are missing. Mandatory fields are marked with a *
    Please check the box so we can stay in touch."

    So I am REQUIRED to select the "Yes, I want to receive info" box, and cannot proceed without checking the box.
    Is this polite/allowed/legal?

    Does the The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 apply here?

    Surely "Ensuring electronic messages are sent only to customers who have consented to receiving it" means you must be able to NOT consent to receiving messages too?

    Come on Telecom, I do not want to "receive further information from Telecom that may be of interest to me" and have subsequently provided my junk mail address.

    Just entered the competition myself. And yes its not a good look. If being on their list is a condition of entry - and I think it possibly could be legally - then they should not pretend that its an option.

    I expect it will be clarified here shortly.

    Meantime obviously today is Launch Day for the network.

    So far as I can ascertain the business pricing plans are not yet available. As soon as I hear what they are I will post a link.

    Meantime there is some blog opinion on the consumer pricing plans released yesterday on Geekzone Here - Here and Here. There is also a Discussion about those plans on Geekzone also

    Having this discussion somewhere else, but thought it may be useful to bring to the attention of Telecom marketing peeps.

    You have a bunch of very neato smartphones with email, surfing etc etc. The top Data Extra (240Mb) is apparently plenty of data to use, say, an E71 or Treo Pro for email and pretty heavy internet surfing. So maybe brand it as such?
    Call it the SmartphoneXT Data Extra? Subline: All the data you'll need to email and surf on the go. Details: 240Mb, most users average xxx, based on xxx emails, surfing x pages every day etc.

    I know with me at least there is some confusion around data usage and fear about suddenly going in to overage...

    Our business plans have been released. They are the same as the One Rate and Share plans however business customers on a Business Share plan get free calling between all the mobiles on the Business Share plan plus the ability to add up to 10 frequently called numbers at $8.95 each that everyone on the Business Share plan can call for free.

    Hey I'm checking up on your question about the competition - although as already mentioned in the discussion - it's pretty standard practice to have "conditions of entry" for a competition that include "we'll send you marketing stuff". Does seem abit odd to have it as though it's an "option" though rather than a stated term of entering - altho' abit like the "accept these terms" button when you're downloading software. I'll pick it up with the testdrive.co.nz team though and check it out.

    Something like a Lite plan, a Smartphone plan and a Laptop plan (or plans). Would make more sense to someone like me who has no idea how many Mb I'd need :>
