  • giovanni tiso,

I still don't know, though, why Abby Burrows only bowled seven overs when she took wickets and didn't go for many.

She was going to bowl an eighth but then her lumps got in the way.

Why does that woman have a laptop on the golf course? I can explain away the high heels, but I don't really get the laptop...

"There's that crazy old cricket lady," people will say, "the one showing the inappropriate amount of cleavage."

And there was me thinking they were going to be describing me like that.

I am very grumpy I won't be in Wellington on the 12th, cos I would totally have dragged some people along for that.

I kind of get the lack of coverage of womens' sport, in that a lot of the time, it's just not good to watch, but the White Ferns are actually good. Aargh.

Kudos to Gareth: I had failed to notice there was a laptop in that picture. I keep expecting her to say something like 'do you know what the penalty for an overdue library book is, Mr Booth?'

Quite possibly, depending on the Knowledge.

Or I might just have decided to start experimenting on y'all.

I probably should have added this on the other post, but for the record, I've only ever read one Mills and Boon. I was 10, my aunt bought it for me, because it was called Megan's Folly. I only have a dim recollection of the cover, but google tells me:

Megan had already decided to enter a convent when she returned from searching for her missing paintings in Adelaide.
Instead, she found herself nursing famous Australian actress Susan Shea Talbot, and falling in love with Richard Talbot, an embittered man with peculiar attitudes toward his wife, his daughter... and Megan.....

Quick question. On what planet is that appropriate for an 11 year old?

  • Joanna,

I learnt everything I know about American history (which is a surprising amount, actually) from reading Sunfire Romances. Each had a girl's name, and was set at a particular moment in history - Megan was about the Alaska Purchase in 1867, and Veronica was at Pearl Harbour for example, and in each book the 15 year old protagonist would have to choose between a wealthy and stable suitor or the wild, crazy free spirited guy. SPOILER ALERT: she almost always goes for the wild & crazy.

I've never been an M&B fan but i have one gf who swears by them and another that only admits to reading them because she was living in Ohakune at the time. The rugby rendition however was cracker!

  • James Green,

On quiet nights in the library, one of my workmates used to read aloud to us from romance novels. She was also very well learned in the formula (there is actually pretty much a specific page in the book where the characters first get it on, and actually the first kiss and various other things are surprisingly predictable, page number-wise as well).

She was also fond of shelving them to try and get a continuous hue-shift from pink through purple (the cover hue cues the how racy, or not, any given M&B book is). Amusingly, there are some greeny-coloured ones which are medical romances. Curious that that is a whole sub-genre.

Now I'm curious. What about that process is puzzling him so much? Or is that just his normal facial expression?

I did make a remark on Sunday about how the closest thing you could get on telly to a woman playing cricket was Nathan Bracken and his Alice band, but it was unnecessarily snarky, so I shan't repeat it.

The story that inspired the excellent Frontline episode Add Sex and Stir .
A longish clip, part 2 is up on YouTube as well. Bruno Lawrence at his best.

I'll be that weird woman always hanging around at strangers' games. "There's that crazy old cricket lady," people will say, "the one showing the inappropriate amount of cleavage."

Satan forbid, though, that you don't morph into some kind of female Plumley-Walker.

  • Bob Munro,

About 2001 when our daughter was still in primary school NZ Cricket shouted the senior school to a free afternoon at Lincoln to watch the White Ferns play Australia. I think they paid for the buses too. Each bus was met by a cricket rep. and the kids were given programmes and the '4' on one side '6' on the other cheer cards. Buses from other schools were arriving at the same time.

The players not on the field were available for autographs. It was a warm Canterbury day and within half an hour the somnolent atmosphere with a few scattered spectators was transformed by hundreds of kids cheering each ball and shouting for their newly discovered heroes.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

I can kind of get the medical romance sub-genre but the one that boggles me is the 'blokes with kids' ones (of which there are a lot).

I was never much of a romance reader but I've had a few friends and flatmates who were so I've picked up one or two when I've had nothing else to read.

  • horse,

I've shot women's cricket as a stringer for the news programme of one of the national TV networks - a visiting international side a few years ago. A former male intl player from that same country was their coach.

The initial conversation from the reporter was along the lines of "mate, we need you to go and shoot some lesbian cricket. <snicker snicker>". And of the list of questions he'd given me to ask the visiting coach before the game, one of the first was "Why are you coaching women?"

    I was (a) disappointed and (b) unsurprised.

Funny how often that comes from men whose combination of fish white pigeon chests, beer guts, crappy tats and inappropriate amounts of plumber's crack aren't exactly a visual symphony. :)

Follow in the men's footsteps and use fielding as a strip-tease –

Follow the men and get get pissed, start bar fights (bonus points if you mutilate yourself in the process), show up to training wrecked, then hook up with a photogenic but functionally brain-dead himbo who will escort you to D-list events where you can cultivate your close personal relationship with Ratshit Glaucoma, Batshit "Colonel" Saunders and the other gossip hags.

Strangely not. I don't think the people that read them really read it for just that. They're certainly beloved by semi-insomniacs who read themselves to sleep.
