  • Emma Hart,

clearly we share the same friends who record the shows on vcr and then post them to us.

Indeed. So we can store their emergency personal-use backups for them in case of very large fire.

  • Russell Brown,

Yesterday the homosexual spirit was Talisker, at the Matterhorn.

    (I sometimes wonder if I'm a leetle bit butch-er than I think I am).

You're right. At the least, you should limit yourself to Speysides, or your voice will get lower or something.

Exactly. Look what happened in The Great Fire of London:

Everybody had thought St. Paul's Cathedral an absolute refuge, with its thick stone walls and natural firebreak in the form of a wide, empty surrounding plaza. It had been crammed full of rescued goods and its crypt filled with the tightly packed stocks of the printers and booksellers in adjoining Paternoster Row. However, in an enormous stroke of bad luck the building was covered in wooden scaffolding, undergoing piecemeal restoration by a then-relatively unknown Christopher Wren. The scaffolding caught fire on Tuesday night. Leaving school, young William Taswell stood on Westminster Stairs a mile away and watched as the flames crept round the cathedral and the burning scaffolding ignited the timbered roof beams. Within half an hour, the lead roof was melting, and the books and papers in the crypt caught with a roar. "The stones of Paul's flew like grenados, the melting lead running down the streets in a stream, and the very pavements glowing with fiery redness, so as no horse, nor man, was able to tread on them", reported Evelyn in his diary. The cathedral was quickly a ruin.

Imagine if there was a fire now and we lost everything. It'd be terrible.

Imagine if there was a fire now and we lost everything. It'd be terrible.

How's them shakes going up round Turangi?
Wouldn't wanna loosen them bungs in the Caldera
    er Lake Taupo....

How many Cinder Cones are there in metropolitan Auckland again?

As I recall the second Captain Sunshine comic* - (finished but never published - Has anyone seen the artwork since?) had a plot line about some villain triggering the Auckland volcanoes...

Between Taupo and Banks Peninsula lil' ol' NZ has darkened the planet's skies a few times now, dormant is such a reassuring word in geological time... Not!

Oh hey, I'll check it out. Used to be in there weekly when my daughter was doing art classes, not so much any more.

Those interested are probably already aware of it but Colin Wilson of Captain Sunshine frame has a blog. Good especially as googles results are weight with the other CW. So much for an Outsider then.

  • Bart Janssen,

As is usual when reading one of Emma's posts I had to google several things - including having to find out who John Barrowman was. Before you take away my geekdom I know who the character is in Dr Who and Torchwood I just can't ever remember actors names.

Anyway I was very amused, given the obvious excitement over him from certain posters here to find the top google hit was from The Guardian asking "Should Torchwood star John Barrowman be stripped?‎

Evil deceitful girl - they still only come in black and white and you know it! But I had to go the site and check in case the beautiful purple of the nano had been given to the touch or phone - it hadn't :(.

Heh... but its an interesting question. When you get right down to it, I'm sure everyone connected with Torchwood finds a five episode season stripped over a week infinitely preferable to what ITV did to Primeval. Despite solid (and improving) ratings, and good reviews for the first time, it was cancelled on one huge mofo of a cliff-hanger and just as the writing staff were breaking the next series. Apparently, the official story is that ITV wants to concentrate their severely reduced drama budget on 'post-watershed' programming -- translation: simulated wank-fodder much cheaper to make than CGI-critters.

And Who/Torchwood fans better pray that 'Children of Earth' does the business on BBC One, because Davies is being quite explicit that's what a fourth series of Torchwood is hinging on.

Oooohhhh right. Too clever for me. I assumed author meant something about Dan C. being cloned or something something. Possibly.

Well, he is making remarkable progress on his comeback... and GOD THE ALL BLACKS NEED HIM AND RICHIE. Kahui, not so much.

The ladies (and some gentlemen), certainly...

From a rugby point of view, Richie is indeed sorely missed.

Not so much cloned as updated. Revised. Taken out of beta.

Stripping still boggles me a bit. (Never said that before.) Five episodes in five nights, you have to clear room in your schedule to do that as the broadcaster, right. And rely on an audience taking five nights out to watch it -because you can't get a night behind. Oh alright, rely on your audience to PVR it - but how do you sell that to your advertisers? I can't work out how it works for the Beeb. But they seem increasingly keen on it - I think that's how they broadcast Jekyll , and my failing flu-ridden memory suggests a costume drama as well.

I'm just resigned to popping my bandwidth limit this month.

Ha, I was waiting to get called on that! So someone could say 'wait a minute, there's no purple iPod Nano', and I could say 'sure, sure there isn't...'.

Such a mean tease I had to console myself by looking at topless photos of John Barrowman. The ones on my hard drive. In my work folder.

You might be thinking of Bleak House which broke the format by being, I guess, semi-stripped with fourteen half hour episodes on Thursday and Friday following Eastenders, after a more traditional hour-long premiere. (And, like Eastenders, an "omnibus" repeat on the following Sunday.)

Oh alright, rely on your audience to PVR it - but how do you sell that to your advertisers? I can't work out how it works for the Beeb.

BBC One doesn't have any advertisers, so they're not strictly pertinent. But 'stripping' certainly seemed to work for Bleak House, which wasn't only a huge critical success but consistently winning its first-run timeslot.

  • Tim Michie,

    On Torchwood's mini-series:

    John Barrowman:
"I felt like we were being punished."

    Russell T Davies:
    "Why not change it?"

    BBC spokesman:
"We wanted to create a powerful sense of event."

BBC. That last makes sense I think as it moves to BBC1, is exposed to new viewers less familiar with the program and want to check out what it's like.

And relatedly, the first of this batch of Torchwood radio plays is available for download today. It says Britain only, but I've just done it no problems.

Though again, BBC, why UK-only, what would be the point?

Perhaps they feel that as the UK tax-payers have funded it, they are entitled to it for free, and the rest of us should pay?

Which brings me back round to Russell's point on another thread. IF I could pay for it, I would. But I can't, it's not available to buy.

They tipped me to crazy over QI, which I can't legitimately watch here, and when they did release series one on DVD - three years after production and as the result of an internet petition - it was only released regioned for the UK.

Yeah, not being able to legitimately watch QI sucks. It's got better and better over time.

    Allegedly.
